Needing clarification on the safe's on Conquest

Okay -- like I said before I have been on Rhapsody of the Seas - their safes had a number keypad which made it very easy to access.

I read somewhere on the board that you need an old gift card or drivers license.... HELP!!!:)

Can someone please explain this to me....I'm sure that it is easy and explainable - but I really am confused by this.

I traveled on the Conquest last October. The safes are opened and closed with your "sail and sign" card. If you haven't sailed on Carnival before, the Sail and Sign card is your door key, embarking and debarking in port, and charge card (tied to the card on which you reserved the trip). You can add money to the card at the purser's desk on deck 3 or 4. Only you and any cabinmates have access to the safe.

 

You get the sail and sign card at the departure port; in this case, Galveston.

The instructions I've seen regarding opening/closing the safes which use a card is to *not* use the sail and sign card. Ideally, one would carry an old, invalid card with a good magnetic stripe and use that to operate the safe. I usually use a credit card I use only rarely.

 

Think about it, what is the one card which can be accessed by any of the crew on the ship? The door key to the cabin, of course. What is that? The sail and sign card, probably modified, but probably similar enough to operate the safe.

 

Thanks for letting me rant. Security is my second calling, so I look at things a bit differently than the general run of the pack cruiser, I guess.

The other reason NOT to use your sign and sail card is that only the one person's card will work to lock and un-lock for the rest of the week. If hubby programs the safe with his card, and wife needs a few bucks out for the casino, hubby has to give wifey his card. Major pain in the back-side.

 

We brought along an expired gift card which we tucked away in a secure spot during the cruise. All of us knew where the card was hidden, so no matter who needed to open the safe, the card was in the cabin ready to be used.

This is not entirely correct - Although you can use your sign and sail card for safe use... But Most opt not to... Most will use another card with the strip on the back... It could be any type of card, Costco Card, and expired ATM Card, a driver license, or old gift card...

Having another card is a GREAT idea. The only card I had besides my S&S card was my credit card. Well, I wanted to keep it in my safe but had to leave it out to lock the safe! I had to find a hiding place for my credit card.

I have multiple slot cards from land based casino, they all have the same magnetic strip, so now each one of us sharing the safe has our own card.

I believe as long as it has some type of a magnetic strip, it should work fine.

We use an old grocery store card with a magnetic strip. No worries about loosing it.

Is your Sail and Sign card the same card used as a cabin key?

If so, will using a store card with a magnetic strip hurt the card itself?

Also, since not all 2000 passengers read CC, what do "normal" people on the ship do when confronted by a safe that says NOT to use their S & S card? Just curious.
