Mendenhall Glacier River Float

We did the canoe excursion two years ago and loved it. I would recommend against the float trip. The current and wind push you AWAY from the glacier down a river which is adjacent to residential area. With the canoe trip you get fairly close to the glacier. Each canoe has a guide with strong muscles. Everyone helps, but the guides do the yeoman's share.

There has been some threads about the river float. Just do a search on top of this forum where it says "Search this Forum". and put in Mendenhall Glacier float trip. All sorts of info comes up.

We did the canoe trip in June. Loved it! You get very close to the glacier and the guide was very informative. Only drawback was we had so novice paddlers so those of us that knew how to properly paddle a canoe had to work harder. Breathtaking views and a good workout too!

I have not been on the canoe trip, but have seen it several times and it get a lot closer to the glacier, with extended time there. The float trips, have NO time near the glacier, only a brief distant view before heading down the river.

Although not the best map- the float trips load on the west side and head down the river, take a look. http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/districts/mendenhall/map.html

Has anyone done the Mendenhall Glacier River Float or the Mendenhall Glacier Lake canoe trip excursion in Juneau?

We haven't done the canoe trip (though I've heard good review of it), but we did the float trip and our family loved it! The glacier was beautiful--got a lot of nice photos of it--and we really enjoyed the float trip. We saw quite a few bald eagles.

I learned a couple of weeks ago that a man I work with also took the float trip and their family thought it was great as well. He's a freelance travel writer. Here's a link to a review he wrote that includes a review of the float trip. http://www.ocfamily.com/archives/ocfamily_2005/ocfamily0105/travel_0105.

Cheers!
