Celebrity Mercury Sky Suite or Concierge Class Balcony? Is it worth the difference?

I am a solo traveler thinking about traveling on the Mercury Oct. 8 for a 4 day Pacific Northwest cruise out of Seattle. I have never cruised on Celebrity before, but have taken over 30 cruises in my 56 years (mostly on NCL).

My primary reason for selecting this cruise is the cold weather destination, as I live in Texas and get enough heat and sunshine at home.

I'd really appreciate anyone's thoughts on the "niceness" of having a Sky Suite over a Concierge Class cabin with a balcony.

I will not be eating in the dining room, as I am sailing for a little piece and quiet (I have a very people-intense job and look forward to not having to socialize when I'm on vacation). Thus, I'll be either having room-service or go to the buffet for dinners (buffet for sure for lunches).

I love cold weather so expect to spend a good deal of time with the balcony door open whenever I'm in the cabin.

I'm a big slot machine user, so when I'm not in exploring the two ports, I'll either be in the cabin or the casino (when it's open).

In other words, I'll be spending more than the average amount of time "chilling" in my cabin. Would anyone who has experience with the Sky Suites on the Sky Deck of the Mercury care to tell me whether it's as nice as the Celebrity website claims?

Thanks SO much! Judy

(Celebrity Mercury, Sky Suite, Sky Deck, #1206, October 8, Pacific NW)

The Sky Suite has a floor to ceiling Sliding glass door, while the CC only has a single glass door. In the Sky Suite the bed faces the window and you can lay in bed and watch the world go by. You will also enjoy the larger balcony so you can be in private.

As far as price we were able to upgrade for just 200 dollars recently. We were on the penthouse deck and did not have the larger balcony. We loved our suite and enjoyed just laying around and watching alaska go by.

Hi Judy,

I have sailed on the Mercury a couple of times. The CC Class cabin interiors are the same square footage as the inside, oceanview, and standard balcony cabins. The extras come with the "perks" of the CC class. With that said...if you can get a CC class cabin on the Sky Deck (1200, 1201, 1240, or 1241) the balconies are much larger than standard balconies because they are on the same deck as the sky suites. Perks between CC Class and Sky Suites are different so you may want to do a search on the Celebrity Forum for the list.

Thinking only of size, I would think the CC cabin would be just fine since you are traveling alone even though you plan on spending a lot of time in the cabin...especially if you can grab one of the above numbers. The Sky Suites do come with Butler service so that may be important to you.

Hope that helps.

We had a CC on the Constellation last year and a Sky Suite on the Mercury for our Alaskan cruise last month. I loved the extra space in the Sky Suite bedroom and the larger bathroom. Also really enjoyed being able to lie in bed and watch the spectacular scenery go by.

I've sailed solo and know that the extra space in the Sky Suite would have been great, especially if the plan was to eat dinner in the suite or on the balcony.

The butler service provided an extra level of attention that also would have been welcome on a solo cruise.

Enjoy, whichever you choose!

Not sure we would do a CC on Mercury again. The MILLI class ship's CC rooms are 20 sq/ft bigger than regular balcony rooms, but they are the same size on the Mercury. Balcony can vary in size. CC can be nice but I would not pay more than $100 more, we did get in room food service. Sky suite is a big difference in size and you have the Butler. Really nice for dinning in room.

1 person, not sure you need the extra space

IMHO

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but Celebrity doesn't offer a buffet for dinner. On the Mercury, if you don't wish to dine in the dining room, you have the following options:

1. Room service (dining room menu available)

2. Casual dining (sit-down meal with waiter service, but more casual)

3. Pizza station/Pasta station/Sushi station/Grill

M-Class ships and Century also have the Aquaspa cafe and a specialty restaurant, but Mercury and Galaxy don't have those.

There is NOT a buffet on any Celebrity ship for dinner!

I would hate for you to be counting on that, only to learn later that you cannot do what you had planned.

YES..the Sky suites on Sky deck on Mercury are EVRYTHING they are hyped to be and FORGET the buffet..your butler will serve you dinner in your cabin or balcony every night if you like.....breakfast and lunch too for that matter, so since you seem to want to relax and chiil in your room these Sky Suites would be just the ticket! :)

We'll be doing the same itinerary this fall. We live on Washington's coast basically smack dab in the middle of the ship's route (behind the beautiful San Juan islands). This is our second time on the Mercury and we chose to splurge on a SS on the sky deck. If the ship sails close enough to the shore ( and it should, these aren't the world's widest waterways and the water is considerably deep) the scenery is beautiful. We have a fair amount of wildlife you can see (including three pods of orcas). Don't forget the butler can serve meals course by course instead of just dropping it all off at once like room service (and he brings you afternoon tea as well). If the price of a SS seems reasonable to you as a single sailer, it sounds like it would be woth it to you. We've had CC on Millie and didn't find it to be worth the money even at a very slight price increase over a balcony. The weather in September should be mild for you. It's not too terribly cold yet and the rainy season still hasn't really gotten started. Hope you have a great time.

Your responses have been GREAT - - just the information I needed. Thanks to all of you, I have booked the Mercury for the 4 day Seattle sailing on October 6 - - Sky Suite #1206.

I can't thank you enough for your input! You are a great group of cruisers and I wish you all days of clear skies and smooth sailing.

Hopefully, we'll meet someday, somewhere on the ocean where life is easier. Judy

Hi Judy,

You would be very happy with the Sky Suite. My partner booked it for me for my 50th birthday a few years back. You have butler service so you could easily have your dinner brought to your room; canapes in the afternoon along with afternoon tea. They really take care of you. We just booked the Alaska trip for next year on Infinity and also booked for the butler service suite on the Penthouse deck. You will be very happy! Deb
