The Formal Aspect of Celebrity

I am thinking of choosing this line for me and my husband, 7 day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean in January. I want something a little more quiet and romantic for the two of us, but not TOO quiet! I was reading the expert review for the Millennium, and while it sounds super fantastic, it almost sounds like it will be too over the top for us. Do all the men wear a tux for formal night, or can a dark suit be worn? The review said that men wore suits for informal nights in the main dining room, and here I was thinking that dockers and a nice button up shirt would be ok for informal nights in the main dining rooms.

We are 30-somethings with no children. I want to make sure people are not in bed at 10PM... is there nightlife, etc.? I'm not looking for a party every night, but some excitement- I think you catch my drift?

I don't want to stand out like the proverbial "turd in a punchbowl" if this is not the right cruise for us! LOL

Your husband will not be out of place in a nice dark suit and tie on formal night. I'd say tuxes are worn by a over 50%, but nice dark suits are very common - that is our experience from Caribbean cruises on other Celebrity ships.

On informal almost all men do wear a sport jacket, but not all wear ties. A sport jacket over a nice button up shirt is just fine, and you'll see some wearing nice polo's and even dressy T's under their jackets. While there are a lot of men with ties, I seldom wear one on informal nights and never have felt out of place.

Thanks for the post.

A jacket on non fromal nights might be a little over the top for me on 7 night cruise.

Also like you I would like at least a little nightlife.

What is the average age on X?

We are booked in April, 2008 and we might have to rethink this.

I guess it must be quite a bit different then RCI?

Hi:) I sailed Mercury to the Mexican Riveria back in March.....

I must say the Disco was lively almost every time I went...and

I have late seating for dinner. If I ended up at the disco

there were always people dancing and the DJ seemed to be

enjoying himself as well.

Yes, it is probably quieter than Royal but I have always found

things to do in the evenings on all of my cruises.

I am 49....I don't know if I am in the average age or not....I just

know I enjoy the product Celebrity provides.:)

I have met people of all ages on each sailing:) and cannot wait to go

again in October!!!

As for the jacket, you are going to get a ton of different replies on that topic......

just like on every forum......

There will be one informal night and 2 formal. The rest will be casual which for guys is dockers and an appropriate shirt.

They do have some nightlife, but it is very different from cruise to cruise. So times rocking other times quiet.

I have been cruising X since my early 30's and have never felt out of place.

I wouldn't say it's quite a bit different. Just different. RCCL is more toward families and the younger crowd.

X is more toward people who want better food and service. Quiet relaxing vacations with enough entertainment to keep people happy. You won't have large number of announcements you might find on other lines.

It all depends on what you want on a cruise.

That wasn't my experience at all. I'd say that only about 20% - 25% of the men were really formal. About 65% - 75% were in dark suits and 5% - 10% were inappropriately underdressed.

we chose it since it is quieter, not a party atmosphere... fewer kids and if we are lucky, no kids... since they do not offer the stuff on RCI... but the average age can be 60ish...depending on the cruise...older for europe, younger for the caribbean...we have been on

RCI when our son was in his teens and travelled with us...he now does Carnival...at 28 he would die of boredom on Celebrity...we like the quiet, classy (hopefully) atmosphere....of course I have been generalizing here...

Thanks.

Two of the people in our little group are in their late twenties.

They had a really good time on RCI but it sounds like they might be a bit bored on X.

Your husband will be perfectly fine in a dark suit with a nice shirt and tie. And dockers and and a button up shirt is OK for informal night (maybe a tie) for informal nights. And dockers and a nice polo shirt for casual nights. Or on informal nights my DH will wear his good dockers, a silk T-Shirt and a blazer, no tie. He says he would rather the blazer than the tie, but he has done both. You can wear on formal nights from evening gown to tea-length to a simple black dress fancied up. Palazzo pants with fancy tops are great too.

There will be plently of fun in the evenings, more like refined fun instead of falling over drunk fun, usually. Evening shows are usally very nice. Casinos are a lot of fun too, we usually limit how much we spend there, but seem to have a lot of fun doing it!

Celebrity is putting a lot of time and effort into attracting a younger crowd and they are succeding. In fact MOST cruise lines are doing the same. The children of babyboomers are looking for more exotic and more expensive vacations at a younger age, than the babyboomers were able to do it. One of the reason the cruise markets are doing so well. They have the babyboomers and their children at the same time.

Ottergirl...

I'm early 40's but a punk rocker very much into late nights. My wife is 37. X is one of our fave lines.

I don't wear suit(s), or tie(s), I've been on countless X Cruises, and usually wear a very nice shirt and dark black jeans at dinner. No-one to date has ever said boo...

Actually, I've started renting Tux's, for $100.00 USD just for a laugh. It's a breeze to fill out the on-line forms, and dress up twice. To me it's like going to dinner in drag. (lol) Makes packing that much easier.

Though we are 'younger' than the typical X cruiser, we've never been made to feel out of place on an X Cruise. Can't say the same for HAL. In my exp, HAL is much more 'uptight' and has no nightlife whatsoever past midnight period. X, especially in the Carribean goes well into 2:00-3:00 AM. Not so much in Europe.

True, Princess and Carnival can be more raucous, but X is the perfect mid-level between traditional n modern cruising.

I highly highly reccomend X for 30 year old's...

if I wanted a night life, lots of activities, people who were in a partying mood..Iwould not take a chance that on that particular cruise there would be enough people under 40 to create that...yes you may find more of that on a carrib cruise...

on Celebrity ships, yes there is the dance club...very few people in it...very little to do after 11 most nights....

I like to walk on deck around 11...for the fresh air and exercise...have the whole deck to ourselves...

that is not the case with RCI....and from what I hear not the case with Carnival either...lots of people...everywhere....way more theme nights...way more sports activities, contests...

not sure if celebrity is trying harder to attract families with children..hope not..I am not ready for HAL..

just hope it stays a more sedate , quiter line ..but we will see how many skating rinks and rock climbing wallls their new ships will have...

hey bottom line...10 years ago I would not have been happy on a celebrity ship...wanted the excitement around the clock...but things change..just glad that there are options for all of us....
