RCCL New Smoking Policy Discussion (merged)

Recommended Posts

Not gonna change a thing, but I couldn't let the new policy pass without a response. We were told upon booking we could smoke in our cabin and just two days ago I received an e-mail saying they had no non-smoking cabins. You can smoke in your cabin and on your balcony! Of course we can cancel and get a full refund but we all (six of us) booked our air already on our own so that would be a problem. I realize we are in the minority as smokers but couldn't RCCL have phased in this new policy by making X number of rooms smoking? Flame away if you must...I'm really not a happy camper (or cruiser) at the moment.

I can understand your frustration! I'd be upset as well. I'm sorry. :(

I just hope Carnival follows suit SOON so all the smokers don't come over there!

As far as enforcement, of course, they can enforce it. They have been doing it for years on Disney, Oceania, now Azamara and even Carnival when the Paradise was non-smoking.

All it takes is for a neighbor to complain and as we all know, cruisers are the best at making sure the rules are enforced! Security opens the door...and the stench will give them away. You don't need "butts" when the smell will knock you down.

If there is smoking allowed on the ship and balconies one would expect that the cabin would smell of smoke even if no one actually smoked in there.

At least that is what non smokers say. It clings to clothing etc. So unless they see a cloud in the room if smoking is still allowed you have to assume a smokers cabin will have some odor of smoke.

so there goes your proof..."poof"!!!!

Non Smokers (the anti smoking ones)

Please stop and think for one minute how you all would feel if RCCL announced that from January 2008, there would be "more" designated smoking areas and some bars/lounges would be completely SMOKING ONLY. Some of you would be up in arms about it and I feel that there would be a whole lot of cancellations going on. Please try and see things from the other side of the fence eh :)

Chris, I agree with you about the loopholes, but respectfully disagree to the impact on RCL's bottom line. As I stated before, most smokers have adapted to the changes in the smoking laws and this will be no exception. You will probably find smokers out on the open deck at strange hours through-out the night.

i see this as backwards logic as well. If anything, there will be a higher demand for balconies because smokers will want them because they can smoke, and non-smokers will still want them because of the fresh air. if anything, i think they will become MORE expensive.

Chubbas, I have been over and over this on the Azamara boards since April. I too am a smoker and when I booked my cruise I was able to smoke in my room and on the balcony. Then when I was switched to Azamara, a letter came stating NO smoking in rooms or balconies. We couldn' switch our dates so we were going. I have found a lot of people do not want to hear about our smoking, etc etc and like I said some get very rude with their comments. Especially the ones who tell me I am gonna die. It will never change. There will always be controversy. Anyway I hope you get your situation worked out. Good luck to you:D

Thank you corona5657 :) :)

Just say..."I was down at the casino" all the quotes from non-smoking families that fight to be first in the shower to get rid of the obvious smell will support that there is no proof:rolleyes:

Don,

My TA told me that the RCI rep she spoke to today told her that the reason she had a hard time reaching them today was because they have been inundated with cancellations.

I called the C & A dept. this afternoon. I was also told that smoking would not be allowed in cabins only on the balcony of the cabin (IF the cabin has a balcony). I indicated that I was very unhappy with this recent decision and that it might well cause me to cancel my cruise next year. The rep indicated that they are taking comments and plan on passing them on to their supervisors at the end of each month. I understand the feelings of non-smokers, however, there are many of us smokers that are very respecting of non smokers space and limit our smoking to very limited areas as it is. This topic came up very recently on the Regent Boards and those folks became so ugly with one another, I hope that we here on the Royal Caribbean board will not sink to such lows as it reflects so poorly on us all as a group. Please may we all respect one another and our feelings.

Like all the other "rules" on ships (alcohol brought on board, dress codes, unsupervised children and teens roaming the ship, children in adult areas) this one will have no impact on anyone other than in the public areas of the ship, which are mostly non smoking anyway except the casino and certain areas of lounges or bars. Unless they install surveillance cameras in cabins and record people smoking it would be impossible to "prove" that anyone smoked in their cabin.

Someone that would be bothered so severely by another person's cigarette smoke on an open balcony of a ship should not choose a balcony cabin and probably should cruise on a completely non smoking ship or go to a smoke free hotel to vacation. I am not hyper sensitive or vigilant about smoking or not smoking and the only place I have ever been bothered by smoke on a ship was in the disco where I spent a total of 10 minutes before leaving due to the smell. I did notice the strong smell of marijuana  a couple of times while on my balcony while in port and might see a few puffs of smoke but it did not bother me at all. If it did, I would either not cruise or not get a balcony.

Sheesh! The next thing you know, RCI will ban FARTING...as it does not improve the "vitality" of anyone!! And....it doesn't smell good, permeates furnishings and bedding in cabins, and can create a whole new group of "anti-farting" protesters!! No farting in any public place/cabin/casino/or open deck areas! The prohibitive cost to remove this smell would be about $600.00. Depends, anyone??

It is the policy on Azamara, (2 designated smoking areas which worked out fine), but I know for a fact people were smoking on their balconies, AND they called to the desk for an ashtray and received one.

When I cancelled today was told the same thing by the RCCL consultant. It may not MATTER to Rccl that we are cancelling but sure makes me feel better to spend my $$ where I have a choice.

As a non-smoker the new rule pleases me. Cigarette smoke triggers terrible headaches when I'm exposed directly to it. When I was on the Sovereign in May and attempted to go in the casino the smoke was so bad that I couldn't stay and while sitting at the pool (in the non-smoking section!) I had very rude fellow cruisers whose smoke blew right into my face. I was the one who was constantly put out to accomodate the smokers. I say way to go RCCI!! Also to you smokers out there who throw your cigarette butts on the ground and any other place they don't belong...the world is not your ash tray!

People cancelling cruises is no different than a restaurant deciding to go smoke free. Smokers are up in arms " I'll never step foot in there again" Well, after things calm down, they come back. I'm sure this will be the same way. I'm happy to see this change and only hope more areas of the ships will become nonsmoking.Too bad we nonsmokers/smokers just can't be considerate of each other.

Good point except smoking is much worse. Second hand smoke causes cancer to innocent victims. Being in a pool with someone elses pee doesn't.

You fall for the propaganda tool..second hand smoke would have to come from MY mouth and go right into yours.

It is called PASSIVE smoke, most of which dissapates before it reaches you.

Wishing you a long life, at least to 105.

I will continue to smoke and enjoy it. And not worry about spending the last 20 years of my life in a nursing home wearing diapers and not knowing who I am.
