MaggieS Posted July 29, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2007 Quite some time ago I read a thread by someone who had been to South America on a cruise and recommended not wearing black due to small flying insects, I think they were black gnats that were attracted to black clothing. Anyway I am trying to tell my husband about this and he says "show me the article because I am planning to take black". Can anyone help me out here. I really can't remember where I read it. Rare Keith1010 Posted July 29, 2007 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2007 I'm not denying that this happened to someone but we have been to South America twice and have black outerwear and did not have any problems. Keith
infohunter Posted July 29, 2007 #3 Share Posted July 29, 2007 I believe you are talking about flies at Petrohue Falls. I've been doing research for our trip ;) Take a look at this thread on the topic. However I haven't read about wearing black as a problem anywhere else. Which is good as my clothing these days is all black, grey, and purple.
Troy86 Posted July 29, 2007 #4 Share Posted July 29, 2007 During our SA cruise we only encountered bugs in the countryside of Puerto Montt, not in the city. The are big, black horseflies, and they are indeed attracted to dark colors. However, we were told that they are around only in Jan and Feb. So, if your trip is before year end, then you should be OK.

Tish in EC Posted July 29, 2007 #6 Share Posted July 29, 2007 on CC I read a review that said that in Puerto Montt it rains almost every day during the summer and not to wear dark clothing because bugs stick to it. It also recommended which side of the ship to sail on according to your itinerary and that only 40% of the time the ships can actually dock in the Falkland Islands due to the weather. It was very useful but unfortunately, I saw this a few weeks ago and can't find it now or I would give you the link. Tish in EC
