Sunny80 Posted July 31, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 31, 2007 Hi, I found a tour online (Dolly Varden Alaska) for a bear watch in Skagway. It is about half the price of the Ketchikan tours (I think because it doesn't involve flying). Has anyone tried this tour? It seems like all the bear excursions are out of Ketchikan and though I would like to save the money, I certainly would rather pay more and see bears than see none at all. Thanks! Budget Queen Posted August 1, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 1, 2007 Sorry, this is a booking agent who does not run tours. This particular tour is out of Haines and not a good choice if bears are your priority. Haines gets a very late salmon run, so I would suggest you only consider this IF you are on the last cruise of the season- third week in Sept. It also is not a consistant sighting area and many "fisherpersons" :) congesting the area. You would be best on a fly in, getting you there as early as possible, and staying as late as you can. It is a better chance for dawn/dusk sightings. Overall- Ketchikan is WAY consistantly superior.
