Andym Posted August 16, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 16, 2007 Pompeii is very large and often very crowded. We prefer Herculaneum. It is a lot more complete. Upper floors are still there and you can see a lot more frescos etc. There is also the fact that it always seems quiet. Most tours go to Pompeii so crowds are never a problem. mountainmare Posted August 16, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 16, 2007 BOTH!!!! We took the train on our own, went to Pompeii first until we were Pompeiied out, then took the train and got off at Herculanium (thanks to the reviews that AndyM gave). I agree that we liked Herculanium better, but are glad we did not skip Pompeii. Then we trained back and had pizza at DaMichele for a true Naples experience. Wonderful day. This was last October and we were the only ship in port, even so Pompeii was somewhat crowded...I'm sure its much worse in season.
Rare carlmm Posted August 16, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 16, 2007 Pompeii in most cases if you have never been to any of these cities. Herculaneum if you have only a short time frame or have a somwhat limited mobility.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted August 16, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 16, 2007 Pompeii, if you have a real love of Roman history. You do get the feeling of how big the city actually was -- some parts of it more interesting than others. (Of course, you should also visit the Naples Museum where all the best frescoes, mosaics, and art from Pompeii now reside to get the true picture.) Herculaneum, if a taste of Roman history is enough for you. Still spectacular.
