NCL Crown 8/26 delayed sailing

I expect that they would have done either the same thing the airlines do,

4 hotel rooms in NYC and some dinner vouchers would have been nice.

Maybe not a bump ticket but since we are losing 1 of 3 nights then a

24% to 30% discount on a future trip.

What do you expect to get? A free cruise?

It is reasonable that with something that is within NCL's control that they take ownership and make you whole. Don't get me wrong things happen, everyone agrees with that. This is not a hurricane this is mechanical. How NCI handles it is what counts. A free cruise is just as unreasonable as 1/7th SBC and 10% of paid fare future discount. It is clear to me that NCL is starting low hoping this does not impact them. They are out very little if there is a chronic problem they will seek to be made whole from the shipyard or whomever. They are insured for this event. Many passengers are also insured but some are not. I always buy insurance and have ever made a claim. Some folks have said that this is industry standard compensation that that is just not true. I know first hand of 50% refunds and 50% `discount on paid fare for a future cruise being issued regularly due to propulsion problems on the Infinity. This exceeds my expectations. It also did not cost Celebrity it cost GE. I am still a customer of Celebrity and Celebrity is still a customer of GE.

If there was a chance of this being outside of NCLs control they would make sure the everyone knew it. That tells me this could have been avoided most likely.

I am surprised you think that it is fair. If I took 1/7th x 2 of any of my cruise fares I would not be able to pay for a reasonable hotel in Manhattan on short notice. Then you start adding in meals and other unexpected expenses and you start to feel it. I am not a shopper but few things scare me as much as my credit card in New York and an extra day on my hands.

I feel pretty strongly on this one and have let NCL know about it, see http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=11366436#post11366436

And what would you expect them to do, give you a frincen free cruise??/ You obviously do not know much about what kinds of conpensation cruise lines give. This, again, is one more reason for trip insurance.

MANY employers wouldn't understand and not everyone has the freedom to just find another place to work. Also, many people work at jobs with hourly wages. If they aren't at work - they don't get paid!
Most people hourly or salaried do get paid for missed days. I am sure there are some companies that may not honor missed days, but most do give a certain number of personal days. Of course if people have used all their vacation and personal days, that is a different story. Certainly no one would expect the cruise line to pick up the cost of a lost day at work. These things do happen.

Beachin,

Glad to see I'm not alone. I posted http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=615715

and found myself having to defend my position that NCLs offer was an insult.

Unbelievable. In the interim I will be reaching out to corporate first thing in the am about this.

OP1

Again, what do you expect? A free cruise, I just can't understand some people.

The poster stated what they expected, so why put words in their mouth?

Also, you are totally out of touch with how many employers treat their employees. In Florida, which is not a right to work state, most folks would be out a day of pay as personnel days are only offered by large companies.

I chatted with my travel agent this morning, and she told me she would get compensation that covered reasonable expenses incurred by a traveler for overnight and meals, from the cruise line without much difficulty.

I am confused I think. Do you want what airlines provide or what cruiselines provide. I have gotten the airline package before. Voucher for a hotel of their choosing and $20 meal vouchers. No discount on the airfare and no compensation for the day of vacation lost at the resort I was headed too and paid for in advance.

So my question would you have traded the 1/7 for the Hotel rooms ?

I think in this situation no one will be happy. I would be dissapointed in the cruiseline, but what is fair? How do you go about figuring it out to make everyone happy. There is no way to make everyone happy.

I feel bad for the people who have no idea and show up a the pier with no plans for a Sunday night stay. What a nightmare for them.

I hope the Spirit stays healthy for my cruise.

Oh Boy!! Crown is not leaving until Tuesday...I wonder how the passengers are feeling????:( Wonder how the new comps are going over? See below...

Miami - Aug 27, 2007 --- While returning to New York from Bermuda on Friday, Norwegian Crown experienced a technical issue with the ship's starboard propeller shaft. While this has affected the speed of the ship, it has had no impact whatsoever on the safe operation of the vessel. Unfortunately, the reduction of speed resulted in a delayed arrival into New York, with the ship arriving Monday, August 27 at 6 a.m. instead of its scheduled arrival on Sunday, August 26.

A team of divers inspected the propeller shaft this morning and, unfortunately, the inspection revealed damage to the seal in the starboard propeller shaft, which will require a replacement of the seal versus a repair. Engineers have immediately started the repair work, but based on the bigger job, the ship is now expected to leave on Tuesday between noon and 4 p.m.

Norwegian Crown is fully operational with all of the ship's restaurants, lounges, entertainment venues and spa open for passenger use, while the ship is alongside.

Based on this new timeframe on repairs, NCL has developed a revised itinerary for this cruise. The itinerary is below:

NCL would like to thank its guests and travel partners for their patience and understanding in this unforeseen situation. As a result of this schedule change, NCL is now extending a 50 percent refund of the cruise fare paid and a 20 percent future cruise credit (based on the fare paid for this cruise) toward a future cruise with NCL. NCL will also be refunding government taxes and fees of approximately $34 to the guest's on-board folio. If a guest prefers not to sail, NCL will, of course, provide a full refund of the cruise fare paid plus all applicable taxes.

Guests sailing on Norwegian Crown with questions can call NCL at 866-234-5615. In addition, NCL will post updates on ncl.com as needed.

I agree with you on the port tax refund for St George. We go Sept 30th. Our cruise fare was so cheap and we really would not have that much back if this happened our week.

Have a great time

Any possibility that you would be willing to share what you paid and for what category? People write about wonderful prices, etc. but no one ever tells "how much." It would be great to know what is/was out there.

My parents just got off this cruise this morning. I just saw this new delay and I had to call and tell her. Needless to say, she is very happy to be home but feels so sorry for the passengers this week.

She couldn't say enough about the crew and their service on the cruise. She said they are all wonderful. The food also was very good.

Mechanically, the ship seems to need some help. Besides this propellor thing that happened, last night the toilets got clogged and were overflowing in some of the public bathrooms near the casino. The cabin steward on my mother's deck (9) told her it was also affecting their deck as well so she was afraid to flush the toilets all night! There was also an odor people were complaining about on deck 9 on Friday night.

The weather was not very good this week. It was very rough going down last Sunday and Monday and it rained a couple of days in Bermuda.

What surprised me was that they never ran out of anything because of the extra day. She said it was like they were supposed to be there an extra day all along.

Any questions, I can ask and get back.

Read my response, I wasn't referring to the OP, actually the OP isn't the one that is unhappy, as for right to work states, I have lived in two: most companies do offer personal days: You are right, the smaller companies do not, this holds true in most states, not just right to work states.

I don't know what kind of a TA you have, but I think she is being very presumptious to make that kind of a statement. Yes, in some cases we can play on the sympathy of the cruise line and our local contacts, more often than not we can not. I am certainly not out of touch with reality. Some employers do treat their employees pretty bad, 90% do not. It is no different than in the real world. Most of the people are honest, caring and fair, there are a few A##e# we have to deal with.

That is awesome! $525 was a great deal, but then to use MC points on top of that, is genius. Just flying down to Bermuda would probably cost you $300 each round trip. Bon Voyage

So, would you stay or would you leave and get the refund? I am just not sure.

We would go. Why not? Its a fair offer that NCL is giving back. Its a shame to miss Bermuda port time. We could manage a good time.

I would go...I would look at it like, I have already flown to NY from Ohio,

I already have the week scheduled off, and with the refunds, would help with the cost of the overnight stay we would have occured, and the on-board credit would help pay the tips, and the discount for another cruise would come in handy when we decide to book to Alaska!

Hi all,

I'm new to posting to this board (I may have posted once before) although I've been reading it for about a year and a half. We were supposed to be going on a cruise to Alaska this past May but had to cancel for a variety of reasons and ended up going on the Crown last week to Bermuda so I was on this ship. Just got back to Toronto last night (drove from NYC).

I have lots of pics to post on Webshots, hopefully later today or tomorrow.

Briefly, we had a wonderful time, even though our cruise was a day longer than expected. It was our very first cruise (although third time to Bermuda) so I have nothing to compare it to.

Our cabin was bigger than we expected, food was better than we thought (I've heard bad things about the buffet but we quite enjoyed it), the crew was WONDERFUL, especially our room steward.

Weather was mostly perfect. It did rain the first 24 hours, from when we left NYC on Sunday afternoon to around 5:00 p.m. Monday night. An indoor pool would have been nice. :) Tuesday was beautiful in Bermuda and Wednesday there were intermittent showers all day. It would rain hard, then the sun would come out. 20 minutes later another downpour, then sun. At least it wasn't a constant downpour, there was still lots of sun. Then from Thursday morning on, nothing but sunshine right until we got home. So really, not a lot of rain, mostly just those first 24 hours.

We were told each cabin would get 15 minutes in free phone calls and 15 minutes free Internet once we found out we were delayed a day. We in fact got a lot more than that in free Internet. I used the Internet quite a bit on the Saturday and Sunday and wasn't charged for it at all. About three or four hours worth ($24.00 per hour). The only charge was Friday afternoon BEFORE we were told the cruise would be an extra day. Everything after that was free. We didn't go over our free 15 minutes in phone calls so not sure if we would have received anything more.

We are very easy going so this didn't put us in an uproar to be honest. My husband and daughter both did miss a day of work though but both will be paid. I'm not due back to work until tomorrow and my son doesn't start school until next Tuesday so it didn't affect him and I at all.

We simply enjoyed our extra day. What could we do?

We had so much fun we are already planning our next cruise. Hopefully we'll finally get to Alaska next summer.

I loved the Freestyle cruising. Just loved it. Eating when we wanted, etc. I wouldn't hestitate to cruise with NCL again. I think next time I would pick a slightly bigger ship. More restaurant choices and an indoor pool would be nice but that's not to say we didn't thoroughly enjoy this cruise as we had a blast.

Any questions, please ask. I'll be on and off the computer all day and I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have.

This board was a huge help in getting us ready for our first cruise and I know my "obsession" with it will continue as I plan our next cruise.

Thanks for letting me babble! :)

Thanks for post #2. :) Glad you had a good time, sorry about your weather.

I'm glad to hear the good comments about the food and staff. I really feel sorry for the people cruising this week. I know who much I look forward to cruising that sometimes the smallest hitch gets blown up.

Can't wait to see your pics! Hope they get the Crown fixed soon!

What do you expect to get? A free cruise?

Take a look at how Celebrity has handled any of its azi pod problems. The option to cancel with a full refund is a key component missing. A substantial discount on a future cruise (50 not 10 percent) would be a good start for those on the shortend cruise.

As for the folks on the elongated cruise, a credit to help with airfares is clearly in order. While my employer might understand my predicament, I would feel bad as vacation schedules are carefully managed and my co-workers would be short handed. On a similar subject,

where are all the teachers who scream at us for taking our kids out of school to cruise?

In many distircts around us, Monday was the first day of school!

iSchool starts the Wednesday and Thursday after Labor day around here. Sounds like you want to argue. What does that have to do with the Crown not saiiling on time.

They didn't have to go if they didn't want to today.
