vermonter16 Posted September 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 5, 2007 Ok, as I try to think of how to fill our day in Barbados I see that there are different pottery places. DH loves pottery and I thought we could just take a cab and go to one of the places (like earthworks maybe). Is there shopping near the pier? Also, we like to find small paintings of different places where we go - would they have any of those near the dock for reasonably priced? And how expensive does the pottery run? Any good places to eat near the dock? We have every other port filled with something with the exception of this one so I figure we'll just take it easy? Maybe? I'm still trying to decide. Any help would be appreciated!
Aplmac Posted September 5, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 5, 2007 All the taxi drivers know where EARTHWORKS is located. Nice view too! Also on the Earthworks complex is ON THE WALL Art Gallery www.onthewallartgallery.com and right next to that is TREETOPS Restaurant where you can sit in a cool breeze at treetop level sip a drink (ask for a Bentley - it's a glorified lemonade) and check out the view right across the island to Hilton Hotel. Yes, On The Wall has small paintings and artwork, they'll even take it off the stretcher for you and roll it in a tube for easy transportation! When you get back home, your local art place will replace it on a new stretcher for you to have it framed. How cool is that?
vermonter16 Posted September 5, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted September 5, 2007 That is way, way cool! Do you know if they have taxis that hang outside of the place when we are ready to come back? Also - what kind of food does the restaurant have? This all sounds really perfect!

Also - what kind of food does the restaurant have? This all sounds really perfect! Glad you like the sound of it. It's really quite a popular stop for tourists, many of them arriving by coach (as well as taxi). No, no taxis hanging around waiting for the odd customer, 'coz it's a bit off the beaten track, but he might wait on you. Maybe you'll come on a coach, in which case that'll wait on you. What kind of food does Treetop serve? Sandwiches, salads, wraps, focaccia ..that sorta snacky stuff. - something to nibble for a light tropical lunch. I forgot to mention that.. downstairs of On The Wall Art Gallery and Treetop is Hendy's amazing BATIK store, where he also gives demonstrations. He's also a conventional artist, so his batik work is goood.
vermonter16 Posted September 6, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted September 6, 2007 Batik? I just googled it! That sounds great too! Do you recall prices on the Batik work? It looks so neat on the Internet! DH is a real crafty guy and loves local art so this seems that it all might really work out! I actually sent an email to the art gallery and they have already replied back with the information I was looking for!!! You have really helped out a lot! I can't wait to tell DH all about it. He's out of town right now but as soon as he gets back I'm going to key him in on this! I think it just might be a hit!

If, on the day you're there, the lady at OnTheWall Art Gallery is Jennifer, she's aplmac's wife - that's why I know so much about the place! Jen works there 2 or 3 days a week, in between the other girls who do likewise. That swift email response woulda come from Vanita, the gallery's owner. Actually there are two On The Wall galleries.. the other one's over on the South Coast, at a restaurant called Champers which does lunch. Champers can be found up on the small cliff at the Eastern end of Rockley Beach, known to locals as Accra Beach. Prices on the batik? I haven't a clue, sorry. I just know Hendy does his magic downstairs of where Wife works, nothing more, sorry.

Aplmac Posted September 28, 2007 #11 Share Posted September 28, 2007 Nice coffee mugs. If you're at Earthworks, going inland you aren't that far away from our No.1 attraction Harrison's Caves - in the middle of the island, so consider visiting Earthworks after your trip to the Caves. ________________________________________

Aplmac Posted October 3, 2007 #13 Share Posted October 3, 2007 we are coming via cruise ship in Nov, which car rental place is recommended? And how do people get to the rental agency when arriving from ship.===> they'll come to you? I would suggest... Coconut Car Rentals call them at (246)-437-0297 -or Fax them at (246)-228-9820 either way I'd book it soon! Winter months get pretty hectic for car rentals around here. Very likely, they'll make arrangements to pick you up at the harbour, and take you over to the nearest Cop Shop to register your driving license(cost Bds.$10 = US$5 - good for a year!) and then you guys will sign a contract, transfer some money and you'll be on your way! That's the usual arrangement with car rentals on the island. _______________________________________________
