San Juan

I wonder why Carnival doesn't get to San Juan much earlier so passengers can spend the entire day there. I have kids, and they're really not interested in walking around a town, shopping. To me, San Juan is a wasted stop and I haven't booked a cruise that goes there for this reason. Does anyone feel the same way?

I agree, I'd love to see the fort, but it will be closed by the time we dock. :(

We got there at 3 on the Miracle, and that was even too late to really do anything. The town seems to close up pretty tight around 7 o'clock, so get off right away and enjoy this beautiful port.

After that, your choices really consist of dinner at a fine restaurant, senor frogs, or a ship excursion. IMO this is the place to do a ship excursion because of these limited options.

We were in San Juan on the Liberty in June. When we got off the ship at 5:00 there were tons of tour operators and taxis waiting. We took a driving tour in a nice mini bus for $10. per person. The tour lasted about an hour, then we walked around, did a little shopping & had dinner at Mojito's. I would rather have arrived earlier if I had a choice, but we had a really good time anyway.

I just don't get it. We're taken to a beautiful island and don't really have a chance to experience what makes it special because we dock at night and only spend a few hours there.

We're doing a Costa cruise in December and I noticed that they get into San Juan at night too. I wonder why?

I've posted this before, but I wouldn't recommend the sunset walking tour through Carnival. We chose it, because we have a teenager with us. The sunset tour was boring. We visited fountains, plazas, but didn't go into anything. It was hard to see anything at night, either. I love history, but we stood outside the fort (did not go in) and listened for at least 45 minutes to the woman drone on and on about the 17th century. My family was ready to mutiny..LOL (It could have been our tour guide, and someone else might enjoy it more)

San Juan is very beautiful, and I'm looking forward to going back to see it during the day.I think the idea of the taxi driving tour and then walking on your own is a good one. I'd like to visit Senior Frogs next time we go, too.

I also wish this stop was during the day. I have visited San Juan during a land vacation, and enjoyed the view around the forts. When we go on our cruise, we arrive at 5:00pm, so it doesn't look like we'll be able to see the fort, since they close early.

Also, we have children, so I'm not sure what activity would be good for them. I'm also going to try to look at the Ports of Call boards to try to get more ideas.:)

I'm not too excited about San Juan either. But after being stuck on a boat for 2 days, I'll be glad to set foot on land again. As long as Senior Frogs isn't too far away from the boat, that's where I'm headed!

senior frogs is a 5 minute walk from the pier. We got off the ship at 3. We went to el casino for a little while, which is across the street from senior frog. Good times.:D

Walking around the streets is really nice. The architecture is beautiful. There are some very nice restaurants. We went to one place called Cafe Bohemio located in the El Convento Hotel on Christo St. www.elconvento.com Also the Parrot Club on Forteleza st is very nice. There is also a couple others owned by that same company called The Dragon Fly and Aquaviva that are supposed to be very good.

Hard Rock is only a few blocks from the pier. Was there about a month ago. If I remember correctly when off the ship make a left....go about 2 blocks and head up another block or two. Very close. Also I would suggest stopping into Senor Frogs. We had a BLAST in there.

Someone also asked about a fast food place. There is a Wendys a few blocks from the pier. Not to sure were exactly but wasnt far from the ship. Im sure once you off ship you could ask someone.

I know this sounds like a totally stupid question, but is there a Taco Bell within walking distance of where the ship docks?

Why would you want to go to a fast food place in San Juan when there are so many great authentic Puerto Rican restaurants. When I travel to another country I love trying the restaurants of that country not some fast food place that I can get here.
