JosieRhodes Posted October 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2007 Next summer (July 31, 9 days) will be on a New England/Canada cruise that stops in Halifax, St John - Bay of Fundy, Portland and Bar Harbor. I am just wondering if anyone has any opinions on which port would offer best whale watching... I was thinking of not doing it in Bar Harbor as would like to see Arcadia National Park... but not sure if would be missing best whale watching opportunity... Any input appreciated:)
MEcruzr Posted October 9, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2007 I'd pick the more northern ports for whale watching in July...
bound4somewhere Posted March 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 20, 2008 Portland or Bar Harbor would be good in the Summer months. Enjoy!
firefighterjake Posted March 20, 2008 #4 Share Posted March 20, 2008 I can't speak to the Canadian vs. Maine ports of call for whale watching, but I can say that I did the whale watching tour on the Bar Harbor catamaran (not the ferry, the whale watching boat) and it was fantastic with lots of sightings. Jan_In_Maine Posted March 22, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2008 That's a difficult question to answer ... we always see whales when we take the "cat" from Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia ... I would think it would be a great treat to go whale watching in Bar Harbor BUT (in capital letters) if one has never experienced Acadia I think that it would be very sad ... It is beautiful, natural, wild, amazing and probably the most perfect area in the world .... (Statistically speaking Mainer's are known to be extremely proud of their state ... ). ChBoxers800 Posted March 26, 2008 #6 Share Posted March 26, 2008 We went whale watching out of Boston the summer before last and it was great. We're going to be on the New England cruise in September and I'm wondering if whale watching is still good that time of year? And if so, what port? whale-watcher Posted April 2, 2008 #7 Share Posted April 2, 2008 The whale watching was excellent off of Bar Harbor and near Boston for us...we did not go whale watching specifically off portland, but I did see a few whales on our way in and out of port. Halifax was excellent for dolphins and pilot whales. You have a reasonable chance to spot fin whales on your sea days just about anywhere...we saw loads on our final sea day (along the coast of maine, on our way pack to boston from halifax).
