Christchurch to the Fiordland shore excursion

We are planning a cruise with Princess Cruises from Auckland to Sydney and wondered if anyone would like to tell me about the land tour from Christchurch to Fiordland. We are in our early 70's and wondered how physically strenuous that trip might be . If anyone has taken it please let us know your feeling about the physical stamina required.

Are you asking about a "land tour" or a "shore excursion".

 

I doubt very much you would be able to do a shore excursion from Christchurch to Fiordland as the driving distance is around 500 miles (10+ hours one way).

 

If you are doing a land tour, the question of physical activity is up to you. You can do as much or as little as you like - just sit back and take in the wonderful scenery as you drive through.

 

I also assume that your cruise will incorporate a visit to Fiordland during the passage from NZ to Australia, so that is another option for you.

Thank you for your response. We are considering a shore excursion by Princess but don't know what they consider streuous and would like someone familiar with this trip to share with us what kinds of activities are mandatory or if we could just sit out the things we felt were to hard for us.

The ships offer a shore tour of 2 nights from Chch, or 1 night from Dunedin.

They join up again in Milford Sound when they are taken out by tourist boat to reboard the ship.

They are not cheap,but for folk who may never be back this way again,they provide a wonderful chance to get inland and see more than just coastal NZ.

If you go to the Princess web site and bring up the Au/NZ cruises you can check out all the Shore excursions ,where they go, and the prices charged.

We are aware of the shore excursions availavle thru Princess from Christchurch to the Fiordlands but would like someone who has information about the physical requirements for this trip to give us some help. We wondered if there was any necessary hiking in rugged areas or strenuous climbing required. Perhaps we could just sit out the activities we feel we are unable to perform.
