Anything around where we dock

I am doing a 11 day cruise so I can't book excursion at each one and just wanted to know if there is anything around the dock if its worth getting off.

I, too, am in your shoes sj25 and can't book an excursion at each one where the ship docks. Following the link proferred by Islandman, am I wrong but wasn't almost everything related to excusions? I didn't see an answer to "is there anything around the dock". I am sure others would also like to know if there is anything within walking distance that is of interest besides shops.

I would agree didn't really tell me if their is something there.

Is there anyone out there that can tell me is around the dock to do within walking distance...and not afraid to walk for 10 -15min to get somewhere is safe though.

10 or 15 minutes, huh?

 

Not really too much except Pelican Village. A nice destination that will keep you occupied for an hour or so. Just exit the Gatehouse and walk on Princess Alice Hwy for 10 or 15 minutes to find it.

 

You also could walk north into B-town (a little longer walk), but I wouldn't go that way.

 

Want more?

 

Continue past Pelican another 10-15 minutes and you'll find National Heroes Square. Cross over the bridge and you'll find the bus station (US$.75/ea for a tour of the southern and eastern parts of the island) and The Waterfront Cafe. A great place to try a flying fish sandwitch ("a cutter") and a cold Banks beer.

 

There is a lot to see on Barbados. It is well worth a bus or taxi tour.

 

Your visit during the day and in the areas that you will walk is quite safe.

There's some Duty Free shopping right in the Cruise Complex, within the port

and some handicraft shacks outside the bldg. near where the taxis lurk.

 

If that's not enough,

Pelican Village craft shops are a 5 min. walk (if that)

once you're outside the main gates of the Port complex

-straight ahead - ask for directions..almost anyone will point the way.

It'll be to your left, about 400 yds. ahead.

 

If that's not enough,

another 5-10 mins. walk in that same direction,

you'll come to the main shopping area of Bridgetown, Broad Street

where many interesting shops cater to cruisers.

Thanks my husband I like to walk so if it is a safe area we don't mind walking at all...matter fact kinda enjoy it more then we do in a taxi.

Yes, it's safe.

 

Just look out for a local jerk known as Peter The Coral Man

who will approach you with an outstretched hand,

trying to shake your husband's hand, and chat you both up

while pushing a cheap made-in-Philippines bracelet over the wife's wrist,

and then expecting you to pay for it.

He's not a physical danger, just a ripoff annoyance!

 

Other than that, Barbados is generally a very safe place for tourists

so please don't worry!

A map?

There's a free publication called Barbados in a Nutshell,

usually availably in Duty Free stores right there in the Port's Cruise bldg. near Customs.

It's a small,handy booklet about 5 x 7 and usually includes a decent map of the island,

which also features a map of the Bridgetown area,inset somewhere.

 

There is also a larger(and heavier!) publication.. In's & Out's of Barbados,

in magazine (thick magazine!) format, also free,

which you might want to take a copy on your return to the ship,

for later reference(your week-long Barbados holiday,next year)
