Ive been to carribbean in Oct and March but never in Jan. I was wondering how cold the water was for swimming and air temp. When I went to Mexico in March to snorkel the water was ice cold (it took my breath away)! Maybe because the water was deep!

If you were on the WEST coast of Mexico, that is understandable, and it doesnt get that much warmer in the summer... The Pacific (off of this continent anyway) is colder than the Caribbean at all times due to the ocean currents.

Water temps in the Caribbean do not fluctuate all that much. You will probably see water temps in the mid 70's to low 80's depending on the ports. For snorkeling, that should be comfortable. You can always increase your comfort by bringing a 1 mm diveskin to swim in if you like, or a 3 mm shortie wetsuit if you are a serious snorkeler who gets cold easily.
