If you opt out of the formal nights and eat in the Windjammer are you able to still go to the shows and casino in non-formal wear? On non-formal nights, what is the dress in Portofino and Chops? I dress for work and really would prefer to just relax in smart casual wear on my vacation. Also, does anyone know if the Windjammer has an Asian food station. Thanks.

I just sailed the Jewel 7/10-22 so I'll try to answer your questions.

You do not have to wear Formal clothes to attend shows or go to the casino. On formal nights I wore a suit to dinner but at least once after dinner I went to my cabin and changed into shorts for the show.

I didn't go onto Chops on formal night this time but I've worn Dockers, golf shirt and a sport coat other times and wasn't the most casual person there on formal night. Of course the sport coat came off during dinner.

My cruise mates tell me there were Asian noodles, etc but I can't say to what extent there was an "Asian" food station.

We were 3 couples ages ranged 53 to 62. Our original plan was to do Hop on hop off buses where ever we could.

 

Estonia - If you are a walker then this is the Old Town to do it in. Cobblestones and hilly but lots of churches, palaces, scenic overlooks. About a 30 minute walk from the ship. An outstanding outdoor crafts, clothing market the day we were there.

 

Russia - We all booked a private tour company. It ended up being 16 people and did we tour. First day we were picked up at 7:30 am and returned to the ship at 4:30 pm. Quick shower and some food and a drink or two then 4 of us went to the Ballet while the other two went to a folkloric show. Picked up at 7 pm and returned at 10:30 pm. Next day picked up at 8:30 am and returned at 4 pm. These were two of the most amazing, exhausting days of the trip. We used DenRus and would recommend them. Others on the ship used other touring companies and seemed very pleased.

 

Helsinki - Took the shuttle into town. Walked down to an outdoor market, food and souvenirs mostly. Visited a pretty church nearby and went to their parliament square. Wish we did the hop on, hop off buses.

 

Sweden -Took their shuttle into Stockholm's old town. Pretty area but just shopping. Walked to the Ice Bar, pretty cool, no pun intended then went to the Vasa Museum. Loved the two things we did but definitely should have done the bus.

 

Denmark - Did the Hop on hop off buses. Saw a lot. Hard to pick a favorite place there. Very nice.

 

Oslo - Rain. Went to a palace and then to Vigeland Park. Hard to explain the park. Do a google search about it.

 

Three of the four at sea day were great. The fourth one was a roller coaster.

The shows we saw were great. If they have a Tango production show definitely go to it.

In the Compass hours are listed as 5 pm to 6:30 pm and 10 pm to 1 am.

I know I got a hot dog there earlier than 5 pm.

 

The only soft serve Ice Cream machine I saw was in the Windjammer but I wasn't looking for one either.

Great, thanks. I just love my late night pizza snacks and ice cream by the pool. We were on Radiance last year and I don't remember ice cream by the pool either, but it was Alaska and I wasn't looking for something cold at that time since it was in the 40's burrrr

It looks like we may be switching our Canada/New England cruise next year from HAL to RCI. HAL's Maasdam is so expensive for this cruise. We can get a GS for less than a small balcony room on HAL.

 

Can anyone tell me more about aft/stern cabins? I have been reading everything I can find. 1100 and 9256 are NOT available. We are thinking of 1604 (D1) or 1600 (GS). There IS a $2,000 price difference between the two (that's almost the price of another cruise).

 

We do spend alot of time in our cabin and on the balcony (weather permitting) and we are leaning towards splurging on the GS. With a Canada/New England cruise in October, it should be cooler so the balcony should not be too hot but it would also not be so cold and windy like the sides???

 

Any thoughts?? Oh, there are only 2 of us and we will be celebrating our 12th anniversary!! :)

Can't help you regarding the ones on the hump but we've stayed in two Junior Suites on deck 10 of the Jewel. 1576 was a great suite but 1584 had a lot of overhead noise due to the fact it was directly under the Windjammer - each morning while they were setting up we were woken by the noise of trollies overhead.

 

We complained the first couple of mornings but they didn't have any other suite of the same catagory (or higher) available to move us to. We were offered a move to deck 2 interior but we'd paid for the junior suite and figured we'd just put up with it.

 

They did change the way they set up in the mornings and after a few days the noise wasn't as bad. We thought that was an end to it. However, on the last night of the cruise we got a call to ask if we would accept £500 compensation as they were aware that it had been particularly noisey during the first few days of the trip. We duly accepted and are using the vouchers for our Easter B2B trip on the Vision. We were also given a complimentary meal in Chops with a very nice bottle of wine.

We were in the most awesome hump cabin but on the 9th deck - 9576 - extra large balcony, great location and very quiet. We had it booked again for March 2010 but the cruise was cancelled.

My Fiance and I are looking to take a 13 night transatlantic in May from miami to UK for our honeymoon. We are all about having a good time, party, drinking, dancing etc. I could not seem to find any disco/club for adults. Does this ship have one? Also, it lists the schooner bar as a "piano" bar...Is this a comparable bar to the piano bars on Carnival ships? What kind of bars/clubs do they have?

Hi there, I believe we are cruise buddies. The temps will be hot hot once we leave Labadee. My thin skinned friends may need a sweater for Miami and it maybe a little coolish in the PM (80 degress) until we get closer to the canal. If air condition gets to you, I suggest a sweater or light jacket as required packing.

Would any of you have Compass from this ITN? I am interested in what happens on the 4 sea days. It will be so nice to have those days to relax and participate in ship activities - so I am wondering what they offer.

There are pictures of 1600 of Brilliance (a near-twin of Jewel) in the link in my signature. It's an odd cabin in terms of the layout, and it's a bit dark because it's missing one set of floor to ceiling windows that you have in the other GS cabins (even the JS have an extra window). But if you have the $2k to spend without crying out in pain, I'd say do it.

 

Have you checked to see if 1602 (JS) is available? That cabin has a much larger balcony, and is completely sheltered from the wind (made it a bit hot in the Caribbean, even). The only downside is that there was a loud thump from above almost every morning of our cruises, both on Serenade (pics in the link in my signature) and on Jewel. It didn't last and we never had a problem going back to sleep afterwards.

Hot!!! We did this one last 9 Jan. and will be on with you again this coming 9 Jan. All the ports will be warn and into the canal it will be hot because it is slow sailing. bring shorts and capris for evening. Miami can be cool if the weather if damp or rainy for departure. sign up for the mix and mingle and read some of the threads for this sailing. The thread is a little boring but that is a good place to meet others of us!
