Will there be Network Television on my NCL Ship?

I am going on a cruise with NCL soon. I do not expect to spend much time watching television but would enjoy watching the TONIGHT SHOW and other favorites when I am in my cabin. Will there be any major network TV in my cabin, or only movies and news?

Sorry, no

ESPN, TNT, CNN, 2 movie channels and NCL programming.

you would need your own player...unless you are in a suite. i have a photo on the front of the tv with the connections showing.

the movies were free..what they called "new releases" were movies like:

the bourne ultimatum, stardust, license to wed, oceans thirteen and such. not really recent theater releases, more like recent DVD releases. some of the other movies, on our cruise, were: pretty woman, a few good men, over the hedge...yes, they were all free.

They used to have networks, but when cruising became as popular as it is today, they had to be eliminated.

All those ships crisscrossing each other just tangled up the cable lines, the channels wouldn't come in, and soon you had people complaining that they didn't get what they had paid for and demanding free cruises, so the cruiselines had to stop offering the networks and disconnected the cables.

Great now a couple of threads are gonna pop up about this being another thing that the lines lost a little money on so now it's been eliminated!

Or is all programming free? We don't share political views so I don't want to watch CNN on my cruise.

Can you play your own DVDs on their TV or should I bring my own DVD player? I have several favorite discs I could bring.

someitmes even CNN has something those of us that don't share the views can watch. LOL

Actually when we sailed the Jewel a couple of years ago we got FOX as well. That was the only time. Of course we rarely watch TV on a cruise except maybe a movie. When I sailed the Star with my cousin she was going nuts not knowing what was going on in the world. I assured her, if anything really important happened we would hear about it.

We felt that way.... crusing one week after 9/11! All other times - I can wait till I get home to see what is going on in the world.

Current US Advertising laws prohibit carriers (Airlines and cruise lines) from re-broadcasting network television programs to paying customers without a special and very expensive license.

The CNN package costs each ship about $35,000 per month to keep it legal.

Today, most ships are unable to properly receive television programming unless they also purchase a very expensive satellite decoding license.

The Superbowl license this year will cost around $40,000 per ship just for the one game.

Unless middle america is willing to pay far more for their cruises, the cruise lines are not going to offer this programming.

Carnival Cruiselines have TV from CBS, NBC, and ABC, why can't NCL?

I meant that I didn't share political views with my traveling companion and I've noticed that watching news programs together, of any kind, is not a good idea. No slam intended against CNN one way or another.

ok, that explains it, but either way, that's ok, we all have our views and that is what makes our country so great. I can imagine why not watching certain channels wouldn't be the best idea for you. LOL

Our past NCL cruises we have had CNN in our cabin.

As far as sports, we have had to "run" on our recent cruises to Pearly Kings and the Casino (which now has 2 TV's showing different stations) to catch soccer and football games.

We have been on 2 NCL ships during Superbowl and have been able to see the games.

It may depend on where you are on the seas at the time??

Sorry, not much broadcast network television. Too bad ladies, you will miss your soaps. It is a good thing NCL doesn't have them, otherwise, we wouldn't be able to do a shore excursion during the day. I would prefer Headline News better than CNN. I like having the news repeated every half hour. I hate to wait a few hours to get my tv news which I usually get in the mornings.

Lovely stereotype there..

I don't ever remember getting upset because I missed a soap. I am a nightowl, and sometimes choose to go back to the cabin, relax, and watch a show (not even a nighttime soap).

I am not sure why Carnival offers programs that NCL doesn't. I know a lot of people don't really care because they don't watch TV on the cruise; however, it is one positive in my eyes for Carnival

AS I mentioned earlier, I can watch all the TV I want at home. Except for a special news item which we would get if it is worth viewing, I can't think of many things that would make me choose the TV over activities on the ship. I do like football playoff games, world series, things like that, but generally Tv is not a big deal. Yes, we will watch a movie once in awhile, but that's it.

I see that I mention what I like and why. I aknowledged that others don't care about what is on tv, but I don't see that I said anything was wrong with them. I did not question why people don't care about the tv, and I didn't pose any question.

That being said, can you please let me know why you quoted me, and stated something I had already read?

My understanding is that playoff games' date=' world series, etc. are shown onboard. True?[/quote']

thats what we have heard, both in the cabins and the sports bar. It certainly better be the case, you will have lots of really disappointed people next weekend if the games are not on.

I liked that Carnival offers these channels. I like to relax in my cabin and watch TV after a long day on the ship, or at a port. My sister & I were surprised that NCL didn't offer these stations. But we were happy they had TNT so we could watch some Law & Order !!!! :D
