? For Smokers Only, Please

Boy I am confused. I was posting on another thread about "not wanting to bash smokers" but.... and now the whole thread is gone.

LOL-Not gone-just a few pages back! It seems to rise up every once in a while! Someone bumps it up and here we go again! That was the thread I found getting insulting. At some point it becomes nothing about a cruise and smoking discussion, it turns to preaching.

Sue L. Thanks. That is exactly what we were told to try. We're giving that a whirl. Yes everything else we tried either made us so sick or the reaction on my husbands arm was scary to the patch!

It worked that good on the cravings for you?

This is more good feed-back on Chantix! :)

Nothing was worse than when I set up a nice snack out on the balcony only to have to come back into the cabin because my neighbor's smoke was invading my "private" space. Turns out my balcony was not "private" after all with regard to my neighbor's cigarette smoke.

In trying to be respectful of my one neighbors non smoking status, I would wait for them to go in at night before going out. One night, after they went in, I went out and lit up. About 2 minutes later they came back out and started, uummmm, started, yep, that's what they started. Guess they figured the kids were asleep and why not!

Turns out my private space wasn't private to their grunts and groans!! :p Yes, I immediately put out the cig and left the balcony.

That also verified what my son said, it is only slightly detectable when the cabin is forward of the smoker and the ship is moving. And if you aren't focused on the smell, it isn't detectable at all!! ;)

What is this? I've never heard of it!

It is a prescription, you smoke for the first 8days on the medicine and kind of just stop after that. You need to talk to your doctor. Some people get nauseous but I am convinced that it is because they don't follow the directions and EAT a good breakfast before they take the pill. There are 10 of us that started all within a month or two of each other, and none of knew the others were doing it. 9 of us have quit totally and 1 is on and off.

Ah I wonder if it's available here in Canada. I'll have to ask my doctor. So it's more or less like Zyban?

NO, nothing like Zyban in the way it works, I tried the Zyban and it didn't work at all for me. The Chantix blocks the nicotine receptors and for me it worked like a dream.

Ah. Thanks! I've just done some research and apparently it is available here. Zyban didn't work for me either. :(

Heck, they're almost $10.00 a pack here, depending on where you buy them! I made an appointment with my doctor for next week. We'll see if he knows anything about it. Were you still able to drink, or do I have to give that up too?:D

Yikes, they are around 5$ a pack here and I thought that was bad. Nope we have our pre-dinner cocktail every evening and no ill effects. The only thing I got was a little trouble sleeping but with my doctors blessing I took two tylenol PM each night (non-addictive) and that took care of it.

I asked the moderators if we can have a quitting smoking section here on the boards since there seems to be some many of us. They haven't gotten back to me but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

The way I see it, 90% of the space is designated non-smoking. If someone told me I was bothering them by smoking in a designated smoking area (which are relatively few and far between), I would remind them that they need to stay in the far larger smoke-free areas if they don't want to come into fatal contact with my open-air, second hand smoke.

Most of the designated smoking areas are a joke anyway. Usually, you'll find 3 or 4 tables in the most undesireable area of the bar, no ashtrays on the outside decks, no smoking on the pool deck except all the way out by the rail (which, oddly enough, is the only area under roof and enclosed if all the windows are not open).

Our RCI days are over - it's AI's for us from now on. But we sure had a great 20 year ride with these beautiful ships! I just don't want to spend a supposed vacation feeling that I'm bothering/offending someone by relaxing in the ways that please me.:(

You are stopping to cruise because you can't smoke in your room anymore. That seems a little extreme. Enjoy where ever you end up.

Have you tried the Chantix? Amazing stuff and I don't even care now that I am not smoking. No real cravings and I had tried all the others.

I've heard alot of good reactions to Chantix. My DW and I have been discussing quitting, again, but really don't see the benefit if we just quit for a short time then pick it up again. Neither of us has any health reasons to quit but it sure would make traveling more convenient. I'll miss my old friend (smoking), we've been together since my long haired hippie days................ :(

On Oprah Jan 22.....

TUESDAY'S SHOW: Dr. Oz: The Latest Secrets to Quit Smoking

Over 45 million Americans smoke. It's a life or death choice that people are making every single day. Our audience is filled with over 300 smokers, and every one of them is hoping that this is their year to quit and breathe free. Dr. Oz shares the latest tools for success in the battle to stop smoking. Plus, Ben Affleck shares how he gave it up. Don't miss Dr. Oz's plan to save yourself and your loved ones.

In case anyone would like to watch or record.

Also, as to Chantix, make sure you discuss the possible side effects of this drug with your doctor. There has been some new research made available, not enough to outweigh the results but enough to change the warning on the package.

I suspect you are referring to the possible suicide issues. I did a bunch of research when that came out, since I was on it at the time and if you read all the whole study those people (really few) it affected that way had had issues in the past with suicidal thoughts. In other words these people were suicidal long before they tried Chantix.

I have been off the medicine for about 2 months now and I have neither the desire or cravings to go back. I have been to parties, to casinos in the smoking section, and through two deaths of close family members all situations that previously would have made me pull out a cig. I keep counting the money I already saved. More money for cruises.

Yes Sue, that is what I mean. I am in no way discounting what the drug can do but I really feel that people need to know all the information that is available about the drug. People with suicidal thoughts or in a depression may not be good candiates for this drug or may need to be monitored more closely should they wish to take it.

You are so right and it is the stuff that you hope the doctor paid attention to.;)

Again, thanks to the smokers that replied to my original question. I did not mean this to be a "bash" session. Again, all I was wondering if you thought it was worth the extra $250 to be able to smoke in my room. I come equipped with a battery-filtered ashtray and mostly smoke in the bathroom so mom will not be as bothered. (Though, she spends all day in a casino with no problem; but bless her anyway). The only problem with me getting a balcony is that I get up throughout the night and usually stay up from 3am on. If I keep opening and closing the balcony door, THAT would bother my mom.

Did you read the whole thread? Many are saying this could be a $250 a DAY fine. This is not a charge for being allowed to smoke, this is a FINE and they could throw you off the ship for breaking the rules. Get a balcony and get mom some earplugs so she doesn't hear the balcony door, which is actually very quiet.

elou, I would not say this has turned into *bashing.* I have seen much worse in that than what is here.

As has been mentioned, I would do the balcony instead of an interior room. Those battery powered ashtrays don't work all that well in filtering the smoke, IMO. Maybe you could have mom in the bed furthest away from the door, open the door only as much as needed to squeeze out, and have a few once there so you can cut your trips out in half.

Ok, well it is still no where to be found, I think the same thing it went up in smoke...I did go back 4 pages and I posted to this thread this morning, but like I said no where to be find

I'll see if I can find it again but if the mods. took it away. It was a good call. Like I said-it was turning ugly and insulting and they may have had enough!

trishalee-although my RC days are not over I can see where some may need to be more flexible where they can smoke. Our last AI we could smoke almost everywhere except dining area's. And big shock-no one was complaining!!:D

Sue L-yes, had a conversation with a Dr. and we will be discussing this at length after sailing. [5 days-had to throw that in here:D ] I hear it is very successful and I'm glad it worked for you and so many in your group! Giving you all the thumbs up!!

elou-this is one of the more easy going smoking thread I have seen since joining. And I'm a newbie here!!! LOL
