However, we just checked with Verizon, and they have verified coverage a-ok in Hawaii.

I had Charo (sp) wish my buddy a coochy, coochy New Years with mine seven or eight years ago We were between islands, off shore. I was impressed. I don't think the two way feature worked though.

Everything will work on your Nextel, both regular phone and the direct connect. We heard a lot of direct connect beeping all over Maui from other people's phones too.

Our son and daughter-in-law have a "nation-wide plan" with Nextel and were able to call from all the islands in August. Son checked with NEXTEL before he left and they said no problem. They have yet to receive the bill to make sure no roaming charges popped up but were assured they would not. As an aside, we used Cingular in Alaska in places that Cingular assured us after the fact that they have no service. We were told that our no roaming may not be in effect when we receive the bill if we picked up an odd tower with a company with whom they have no agreement. The bill came Saturday. No charges. The staff on the ship told me that Sprint works very well in all the Alaskan ports, but I got a signal when we were on ship and not near the ports??? Oddly, I do not have such good luck in my own neighborhood.
