In port a long time!! What to do!!

I'm sailing on the Maasdam later this fall. One of our stops is Barbados. We are in port from 4 a.m. to midnight (addition cruisers are boarding at this port).

Since we are in port for a very long time, I figured that I can do an island tour, have a great lunch and shop without a true concern for time.

Last year when I went to Barbados, however there were two things working against me. One we were there on Easter Monday and everything was closed! Also, I had a bad tour with one of guides mentioned in another thread (the tour wasn't right for a single person) this was the first time that I ever ready to leave a tour. I was left with a bad taste about Barbados.

I need some suggestions on what to do.

Any input????

Get a taxi to Accra Beach

http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/cncisland/bigships/Accra.html

15-20 mins. away from the Port

and where you can spend the morning and maybe have lunch in that vicinity

(several choices - Chefette, Just Grillin', Champers)

then catch the bus(local flavor) back into Bridgetown where you can shop for the afternoon.

Admittedly that's no huge plan, but it'll get you out and about without spending a fortune

unless you go wild on the shopping in Bridgetown.

OR you could hire a taxi after lunch and do a bit of an island tour based on your interests

(tell the guy if you think you might like Orchid World or Flower Forest?)

Don't like the look of Accra?

There's a few more choices to look over at..

PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT FLOWER FOREST?

Do you drive through or walk or what?

I'm handicapped and would like any info you have.

I haven't been there in quite a few years

but can tell you that you walk through this botanical garden, along various paths.

You say you're handicapped, but not to what extent, so I can't assess....

but I'm sure Flower Forest has had wheelchair/handicapped people go thru their gardens before

even though the site is on the side of a sloping hillside.

I found their website at URL..

http://www.barbados.org/flowfrst.htm

so you might want to start there and have a poke around

maybe send them an email?

There's also Orchid World and Andromeda Gardens for those of horticultural pursuit..

...neither of which are on flat ground,I might add -sorry!

Orchid World has a bit of uphill/downhill to it,I'm afraid

but again..you didn't say to what extent your immobility impairs you..

I saw somewhere else..just recently

that the walkways at Flower Forest are (as I remember them)

not paved, but rather a gravel-type pathway,

-All well and good for non-handicapped people, but I'm not so sure about you.

If you've got an attentive travelling companion along with you

to help at the difficult bits, you'll probably be okay!

You might want to ring them beforehand and ask a few questions?

I’d take advantage of your extended stay on the island and do something most cannot.

How about a Harbour Master Sunset or dinner cruise? When dusk comes and you’re offshore looking into the lighted city, it is just magic.

How about Harbour Lights Dinner Show? You will not be disappointed.

Another suggestion is Bajan Roots and Rhythms (if it’s still running). A great dinner show and not far from the ship.

Barbados at night is another world. It is truly worth considering.

I do know that I want to visit Accra beach when I'm there. I figured that I go the beach early in the morning around 9:30 a.m. and hang there until about 2 p.m.

I also got a great suggestion for an dinner show.

Keep the ideas flowing!! It's not often that you are in port for so long (19 hours) I just want to take full advantage of this!!

Happy sailing!!!
