Does anyone know if you can rent scooters in Barbados? And if so, do you need any special certificates or license to drive on the island other than a North American Driver's license? Also, is this island a good option for scooters? They were fabulous for my wife and me on both Cozumel and Aruba, total freedom.

Does anyone know if you can rent scooters in Barbados?

And if so, do you need any special certificates or license to drive on the island

other than a North American Driver's license? ===> You'll need to register your US license at local Cop Shop, cost US$5.

Also, is this island a good option for scooters? ===> IF you're skilled, maybe.

They were fabulous for my wife and me on both Cozumel and Aruba, total freedom.

Know that Barbados' roads are busy and overcrowded.

This is not Aruba!

We have about 110,000 registered vehicles on the island, if that tells you anything.

If you are an experienced, regular scooter driver, you'll be okay,

but I'm worried about your wife

unless she too is at least as experienced and confident as you are!

When I was a younger lad(about 150 yrs. ago)

I was in the scooter-rental business for awhile, and we saw....

but back then there may have been only 60-70,000 vehicles on those same roads

- plus we were all younger. :)

Don't let me put you off renting a scooter (I think they're still available, but not sure)

...I'm just asking you to Be Real about congested road/traffic conditions here,

that are not particularly conducive to scooters ridden by wobbling tourists

who think they'll be accorded special privileges. Uh-UH!

A regular US Operators License should be all you need, but double check, please.

Google 'rental scooters in Barbados' or something like that

and ask lotsa questions if/when you find a source.

Be careful...it's a jungle out there!

Demario's Cycle World had a outlet at the cruise terminal late last month. Scooters + small motorcycles.

All that I can offer is their phone number : (246) 436-3117

One used to have to get a permit for $5-10US at the police station, but I'm sure the rental houses must have them available, too.

If you've never driven in Barbados, I urge you to get a lay of the land (and traffic) before you commit to the scooter.
