San Juan Hotels

We are sailing on the Destiny out of San Juan in August and were thinking of going a day ahead to spend some time in San Juan before sailing. Can anyone recommend a nice, clean, not too expensive hotel that's close to the pier??

We chose to stay at the Embassy Suites. If I recall, it was about a 15 minute cab ride to the port. Very nice, clean hotel with a free bfast. Has an Outback Steakhouse in the hotel so we never had to leave. It was nice. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Thanks - a co-worker also suggested Embassy Suites but unfortunately they don't have any availability for the dates we are travelling. I'll keep checking though to see if something opens up.

I stayed at the Caribe Hilton. Nice hotel, good restaurant, fantastic pool area and bar. About a 10 minute cab ride to the pier. I paid $160 for 1 night through Hotwire, but I've read many people getting a room for under $100.

We stayed at the Courtyard San Juan Miramar. About a 10-15 minute taxi ride to the pier. It was clean and comfortable and the staff was very helpful and friendly. One of the desk staff was out in front of the desk with a stapler helping some fellow cruisers who needed their cruise luggage tags attached. The luggage porter gave us some suggestions on local restaurants within walking distance to try. Breakfast was included.

 

We paid $230 including taxes for a one night stay. It was peak season (New Years) so the price was a bit higher than normal.

We stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan, right across the street from the pier and payed $175 for one night, but that was 4 years ago - it's gone up since. We are still hoping to find a good deal for that hotel though for our cruise in January. Would definitely recommend the hotel though.

We stayed at the Intercontinental Isla Verde. In fact, we walked a few blocks and ate at the Outback Steakhouse in Embassy Suites. Hotel was nice, but beach and pool area were great. Paid about $159 per nite, and it was about 15 minute cab ride to the port.

We used priceline dot com and ended up staying at the San Juan Water and Beach Club right on the beach in Isla Verde for $85/night tax and all. If you don't mind a little "gamble" for a 1 night stay, you might end up with this "Miami-ish" hotel which was a great deal for the money!

We booked the Sheraton in Old San Juan for our Destiny cruise in May. The rate on Starwood (Sheraton) website was #$295.00. I tried the Senior rate (which I can use thanks to my DH) and used it. I got the room for $145. So make sure to take advantage of senior, government, etc. rates if you can.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for our January trip on the Destiny. I had read reviews on Tripadvisor and was a bit leary of booking it. It was a very nice hotel, with free continental breakfast in morning. I would stay there again. We walked to a Chili's down the street for dinner. I think it was a $16.00 cab ride (for two of us with three bags) from the airport.

Thanks Everyone! Another friend of mine also recommended the Caribe Hilton booking through priceline.com. Said you can definitely get a room there under $100. He's done it more than once.

we are currently booked at the Marriott miramar but see tripadvisor giving it bad reviews I noticed Emabsy suites opened up some rooms for 20.00 more than we are paying at the marriott... should we switch to the embassy suites and casino.....Is this hotel close to some things?

We just stayed at the Radisson Ambassador Hotel & Casino. 15 minutes from the airport. 15 minutes to the port. I would recommend.

I would recommend the Radisson Ambassador, Caribe Hilton, and the Wyndham Condado? Plaza. I have stayed in all of them and they are nice. I always use Priceline, or Hotwire.

I've never stayed at Embassy, but I have stayed at the Courtyard San Juan Miramar. I read the reviews before we went and didn't see anything too awful. Most of the "bad" I read was subjective stuff that I've read in reviews of all the hotels I was looking at. Maybe it's changed since then! ;)

 

We stayed there and had no problems. There were a lot of restaurants within walking distance but not much in the way of shopping and such. That was OK with us because we weren't looking to shop.

We also stayed at the Sheraton-Old San Juan. Great location close to pier (we walked to cruise ship), clean and not too much $$$.

The hotel is walking distance to many restaurants and it has a casino located inside the hotel.

Before we boarded the ship you get an awesome view from the pool level of the Destiny.

Not a 5* hotel, but great for a pre cruise night.

I too have stayed at the SJWandBC. LOVED it. I have never been to Miami, but I'll go ahead and agree with Lucyddr...I would say it feels European. I love the bar and lounge on the roof and the restaurant in the lobby is nice. Hotel is at the beach...great for morning walks or nighttime strolls...

We won't be arriving in San Juan until after 9PM. I figured we would go to the ship around 11:00 AM. We don't sail until 11:00PM, so we were planning on boarding the ship and then going back out into OSJ. We will be sailing on Princess, which docks right in OSJ. I thought that staying at a hotel near the airport with our late arrival would be best. Then we could take a cab in the morning to the ship.

 

Does this plan sound like it would work? Or should we stay at the Sheraton near the ship and do our sightseeing in the morning before we board? Any suggestions for hotels near the airport? We have been to San Juan twice before, but this will be our first time sailing out of there.:)
