Wine Carry-on Policy
Put it in a coffee mug - maybe even a HAL coffee mug - and who will know what you're drinking?
On our last cruise, I just poured a glass of wine in my cabin and went out to the promenade and found a nice chair to relax in.

I am not sure about glass by the pool, I can't recall :-) but I have no problem pouring myself a drink and strolling with it. It is your vacation, you shouldn't have to feel like you must be sneaky to enjoy your own beverage.

I don't take it in the bars or casinos or somewhere that they serve wine, but I do have no problem sitting in a deck chair or strolling with a glass outside.

No, but you should be embarrassed that you may ruin it for the rest of us. Other lines have clamped down severely on the amount of wine they allow you to bring aboard. This was done in reaction to those passengers who abused the privilege and ignored the rules - which state that you can enjoy the wine in your cabin.

Yes, it's your vacation (it's also MY vacation, and that of hundreds of others on the boat) but it's also HAL's ship - and gthey get to make the rules. Your choice is to either observe them, sail on a different line or be a selfish passenger who really doesn't care what effect they have on the many other HAL passengers.

Wow, do you really think it is selfish of me to enjoy a glass of wine while sitting in a deck chair? How on earth will that affect your enjoyment of the cruise? It is interesting that you would waste your time energy and emotion on whether or not I am drinking wine while relaxing on deck chair. I have a very different perspective. It's called Live and Let Live.

Here is a copy of the HAL policy. Verbatim.

No where does it state that the beer/wine brought on board must be consumed in my cabin. I called HAL and they said that the liquor purchased in the Room Service/in Room liquor packages must be consumed in my cabin, but that does not apply to wine we bring on board.

Otherwise, how can I take a bottle to the dining room and pay the corkage fee for enjoyment with my meal?

They assured me that drinking my wine in a deck chair is not against policy. IF I TAKE the bottle to any of the dining rooms or the bar, then I pay a corkage fee and they will serve it.

If I pour a glass in my cabin (in other words, open it myself and store it myself) and go sit on a deck chair, it is perfectly acceptable.

Here is their policy:

Except for wine and champagne, alcoholic beverages purchased in the vessel's shops or otherwise brought on the ship cannot be consumed on the ship. Bottles and other containers will be collected for safekeeping and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the voyage.

Well darn, mybagsarepacked - you're using logic & facts to counter the assumption that by you having a glass of non-HAL-bought wine on a deck chair we will all immediately lose every nice thing on every HAL cruise from here to eternity <g>.

By the way, I'll be doing the same thing - possibly even walking with a glass of wine in my hand on an outer deck or two. I'm confident I'm not violating any HAL rule, and don't care about the bogus rules other passengers might feel should be in place.

Thanks for posting the facts - enjoy your cruise! (and your wine)

If, indeed, the policy has changed (and it wouldn't surprise me if it had) then there's nothing to stop those who suggested pouring a large glass of wine in their cabin and carrying it into the dining room. So I expect they will do that, simply because it isn't forbidden to them ("the policy only covers bottles of wine you bring to the DR!" they will claim.)

I suspect the days of being able to bring unlimited amounts of wine aboard may now be numbered.

As I've said, I really don't care where you drink or what you drink, until it starts to change policies that do affect me.

Absolutely and I agree that when the policies change it is annoying. I certainly hope that they don't limit the amount, but honestly I don't take that much wine. Just enough for a glass or two a day, and then I take the bottles into the dining room and have them serve them.

I won't take a glass of wine into a dining room, but I definitely will take it to a deck chair now and then.

mybagsarepacked - nononanette cautioned me to let some things go in one ear and out the other from some posters. It's not always easy!!!!!!!! Mix a drink or pour a glass wine and enjoy it anywhere on the ship. And if you think you are the only one on the ship doing this just put a smile on your face and enjoy.:p There are so many wonderful people on HAL cruises you will have a great time. As with discussions regarding the range in the dress code there is a range of acceptability of what personal alcoholic beverages you can and cannot enjoy once you are on board. You are correct....it is your vacation, and unless I am missing something you have tried to make sure you are not going do anything to offend other "HAL" cruisers and are looking forward to a great vacation. HAVE A GREAT CRUISE. Cherie

Oh, great.... make me out to be the bad guy, Cherie! ;)

Whoops! Too late.

That happened some time ago. :p

Give it up, baby. The wild dawgs are circling. One bright spot....when they get through with those who they determine to be dissenters, they eat their own! (That's kinda fun as a bystander) :)

Fun cruising to you guys! :D

And I personally have no objection to that, just to those who are determined to "push the envelope" to see what they can get away with, often, sadly, to the detriment of us all.

But do have a sip for me....;)
