mikefang Posted September 23, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2004 Has anyone taken the HAL shore excursion to Mystic Seaport on the New London port visit? Would you recommend the tour or look for a tour on the pier? Thanks, Mike.
captbill Posted September 25, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 25, 2004 I live in Connecticut and can recommend Mystic Seaport as a worthwhile destination for the day. Another little advertised attraction would be the Submarine Museum in Groton (just a few miles from where you'll be docked in New London). I always tell visitors that visiting the USS Nautilus is the only thing you can do in Connecticut for free! mikefang Posted September 26, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted September 26, 2004 Many thanks Captbill! We are looking forward to seeing Mystic. As a retired 'skimmer' we had a chance to see the submarine museum in Pearl Harbor. I would agree that seeing the sub base at Groton would be a recommeded destination for anyone! Ocean Boy Posted September 27, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 27, 2004 Mystic Seaport is a great place to spend a few hours. You walk in there and it is like stepping back into the 18th century. The Nautilus Museum is also very interesting. Coming from a Naval family I love places like that. However, don't think that you are going to get on the sub base these days. Security is very tight. Krazy Kruizers Posted September 27, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2004 We did the Mystic Seaport tour when we were on the Maasdam this past May - loved it. We spent several hours there and then took the shuttle over to the town itself and toured there - lots of quant shops. We were only in New London until 2 - too short a time. Since it was the Maasdam's first time there we were greeted with cannons being fired and the fire boat spraying water. The band played most of the day. Signs were everywhere welcoming us.
mikefang Posted September 29, 2004 Author #6 Share Posted September 29, 2004 Thanks again for the info. Krazy kruisers-glad you enjoyed the Mystic tour. Did you take the ship shore excursion or one from the pier? Mike

Since this was our first time there, we weren't certain about where to rent a car and we couldn't find any information about buses going there from the ship.
