njtwinmom Posted March 1, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2008 We will be driving from NJ to Ft. Lauderdale. We would like to stop the first night in Florida so that we only have about 3 hours the next day to get to the port. What would be a good stopping point for the night? Rare Lois R Posted March 1, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2008 Hi,:) I live in Jacksonville, which is the first large city you will hit once you cross the Ga/Fl county line. We are 5 hours north of FLL so if you want to go 2 hours south of me that would be about Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach. I have driven down many times and that is how long it takes me. There are plenty of hotels here as well as Daytona, (you will pass there south of us too). If you are interested in the beach, Cocoa is nice....if you want to be near 95 there are all the major chains along the way.
Host Kewlguy Posted March 1, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 1, 2008 Just curious why would you drive for 24/hrs when you can fly down in 3 hrs. or less?

Bequia Posted March 1, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 1, 2008 The Orlando area has numerous hotels to fit any budget. Typical driving time from Orlando to Ft Lauderdale is 3.5 hours with pit stops.

I guess it depends on how they are mapping it out.
njtwinmom Posted March 1, 2008 Author #7 Share Posted March 1, 2008 Just curious why would you drive for 24/hrs when you can fly down in 3 hrs. or less? My husband won't fly. He likes to drive, so it's no problem. We are used to it because we usually drive to Disney at least once a year for vacation.
Bequia Posted March 1, 2008 #8 Share Posted March 1, 2008 Lois your absolutely right, Orlando wouldn't make sense, I've got that Florida Turnpike mindset. Once in awhile I'll do a road trip to NY, I usually stop between Savanah and Florence to break up the trip. The Ft. Pierce area would probably work for njtwinmom.

BlueHerons Posted March 6, 2008 #11 Share Posted March 6, 2008 Just curious why would you drive for 24/hrs when you can fly down in 3 hrs. or less? My husband and I actually enjoy the roadtrip. Of course we can easily make the drive in 10 1/2 from South Carolina but if we get a late start, there is an inn, The Riverview Inn in New Smyrna Beach that we love to stay at. I had to fly so much for work that I'll do anything now to avoid flying. It isn't that I'm afraid of flying but that it is such a giant PIA I'd rather drive.
