geocruiser Posted March 16, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 16, 2008 Hi, We are thinking of doing a transatlantic in the fall. How rough are the crossings? We have cruise a lot but never across the big pond. Geo
LEESRE Posted March 16, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 16, 2008 What ever anyone says you cannot tell from one year to the next. We have crossed the pond many many times in different months and had smooth crossings most of the time. You could be lucky and get a smooth crossing or a rough one, depends what the weather is like at that time of year, and in the day and age who can tell???? DrivesLikeMario Posted March 16, 2008 #4 Share Posted March 16, 2008 Either rough or smooth. You never know what you'll get. ;)
F355c5 Posted March 16, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 16, 2008 You will have a better chance on smooth water if you take the southern route. Leave from Florida not NY. We have crossed the last 4 years and they were very smooth. Both in April and Nov. The roughest part was in the straights of Gibraltar This was just before our stop in Lisbon. Lots of people left in ship on flew home. Funny thing the actual crossing was a piece of cake.{waves 3 to 5 feet} Love TA for the sea days and meeting wonderful people. Good luck
Pam in CA Posted March 16, 2008 #6 Share Posted March 16, 2008 It could be anything. You'd have to ask Mother Nature because it could be calm one minute, rough the next. Sea conditions can be affected by storms thousands of miles away -- you just never know unless you're looking at a world weather chart a day or so before you leave. Druke I Posted March 16, 2008 #7 Share Posted March 16, 2008 We've done half dozen trans-Atlantics, and have one coming up next Saturday (3-22) on Oceania's Regatta. We have had ocean state from dead calm to Force 8 Gale - you never know what is in store on the ocean!
