Lifou question

Hi,

just wondering when the ship anchors off Lifou, is it easy to make our own way to the Cliffs of Jonkin-(is it walking distance?) Or should we pay $55 perperson for the P&O 2hr tour?

Is there anything else I should see while there?

Thanks

dont know about the tour- sorry- but a really nice thing to do is climb up the hill to the left of the island. there is a really nice view of the island and the ship. there is a small church up the top of the hill. but it is a very long and tough walk- but well worth it.

Hi staceymrow!

We did the tour last year - and thoroughly enjoyed it!

It is too far to go by yourself (unless it was much closer than it felt and the bus went round in circles!). The tour also goes to a vanilla plantation - which was lovely! then headed to Jonkin.

The view is really very nice - you're welcomed by the villagers (we were given woven hats with flowers in them), the usual fresh fruit and coconuts were available to eat as well.

We had the choice to either walk down the stairs to the bottom of the cliff (which means you have to walk back up again!) or go into the Chief's hut where the guide spoke to us about the tribal life, etc on Lifou.

My husband and the kids walked down the stairs - he said there really wasn't anything more to see at the bottom than you could see from the top!

We did enjoy the tour - and didn't think it was too overpriced as far as P&O tours go!

Photos below of Jonkin and the Vanilla Plantation! (sorry they're small!):)

From the top of the hill you will also see Jinek Bay, which is handy for a swim and snorkel on the way back

Found something else I was looking for .... some time last year there was a query on this board about the location of things on Lifou. Between a few CC-ers there are some of the locations (including Jonkin, Jinek Bay, where the ship anchors, tenders, etc) on this map:

Hope the link works!:)
