Floflegs Posted April 2, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 2, 2008 Try ginger tablets or capsules. They work for me.
teripp Posted April 2, 2008 #3 Share Posted April 2, 2008 For me it is anything with Meclazine in it. I take it at night so no issues on being sleepy during day. Start taking what every you decide on a few days before the cruise so it is in your system already. When you board.... No issues.
Rare chasinraynbowz Posted April 2, 2008 #4 Share Posted April 2, 2008 As you can see, you will get varied answers. What works for some, like ginger, doesn't work for everyone. For me, its Bonine. I take one each evening before bed and don't feel drowsy at all. You can get Bonine at any drugstore or WalMart.
FritzG Posted April 2, 2008 #5 Share Posted April 2, 2008 We've had great luck with ginger. The good thing about ginger is that it is an herb, and it usually won't interfere with prescription meds. If you take meds. it's best to check with your dr. My husband takes a lot of heart meds. and his dr. said ginger was the best alternative to any over the counter meds. for seasickness. First_Time_Sailer Posted April 2, 2008 #6 Share Posted April 2, 2008 I took the Target's generic form of Dramamine on my cruise and had no issues. (The pharmacist is an avid cruiser and recommended it!) Started taking it a day before we left and took it every 12 hours while at sea. I also nibbled on gingersnap cookies. Enjoy your cruise! cookingchick Posted April 2, 2008 #7 Share Posted April 2, 2008 Hello everyone, Can anyone please tell me what is the best sea sickness medication that does not make one drowsy? Thank you Monique I've tried them all and meclizine works best for me. Meclizine is the active ingredient in Bonine...Bonine just costs more than the generic brand. I also take it at night but have taken it many times during the day with NO drowsiness whatsoever and I am hypersensitive. I have tried ginger capsules in the past but urp ginger all day so it was very, very unpleasant (unless, of course, you like tasting ginger all day). I start taking meclizine the night before the cruise and take one each night while on the cruise...I've even taken it after the cruise (on particularly rough rides) until I got my land legs back. LARGIN Posted April 2, 2008 #8 Share Posted April 2, 2008 There seems to be lots of questions on over the counter medications taken to prevent motion sickness, nausea and vomiting. I did a little research on the two most popular over the counter formulations; Dramamine Original and Dramamine Less Drowsy, Bonine and Meclizine HCL and offer the following. I am not a doctor or pharmacist. I just looked up the information on the internet. Dramamine Original Average cost: $4 for 12 pills Active ingredient: 50mg Dimenhydrinate Drug class: Antihistamine Uses: Reduces allergic symptoms such as hay fever, hives, rash or itching; Prevents motion sickness, nausea, vomiting; Relieves symptoms associated with the common cold; Induces sleep. What the drug does: Blocks action of histamine after an allergic response triggers histamine release in sensitive cells. Histamines cause itching, sneezing, runny nose and eyes and other symptoms. Appears to work in the vomiting center of the brain to control nausea and vomiting and help prevent motion sickness. Skin and Sunlight: May cause rash or intensify sunburn in areas exposed to the sun. Dramamine Less Drowsy, Bonine and Meclizine HCL Average cost: Dramamine Less Drowsy: $4 for 8 Pills Bonine: $7 for 16 pills Meclizine HCL: $7 for 100 pills Active Ingredient in all three: 25mg Meclizine Hydrocloride Drug class: Antiemetic, antihistamine, anti-motion sickness. Uses: Prevents motion sickness and treatment for Vertigo. What the drug does: Reduces sensitivity of nerve endings in inner ear and blocks messages to brain’s vomiting center. Skin and sunlight: No problems expected. As you can see, Dramamine Less Drowsy, Bonine and Meclizine HCL are identical. You are paying for the “Brand” name. Buying the generic Meclizine HCL will save you a whole bunch of money.

I will know now to look for the generic brand and save money!!!
