A verandah, sir? Will that be an inside or oceanview?

The scariest aspect of this is that if the giant is a financial success Father Carnival will decide they have to match it at HAL or Princess, just as they have with as you wish dining.

Despite assurances of various HAL managers that they consider the Vista/Signature classes to be optimum for HAL, I can't help but notice that the Vista class ships carry almost 40% more passengers than Amsterdam, the newest non Vista ship, and the number of passengers jumps to 2004 on Eurodam. Can 3000 - 4000 -5000+ be far behind?

I'm just thankful that we still have some other choices with Crystal, Regent and the former Renaissance "R" ships in their various reincarnations, albeit at significantly higher cost.

If there were an award for "Best Thread Title on Cruise Critic," I would award you the blue ribbon.

Your thread title makes a point, it's funny, and it's eye-catching - all the elements that create a good subject for discussion.

Thanks for the laugh and the creativity.
Heather, ........... I just wish I lived closer to a port like you and then I would need and "IN" to get my on board for a tour:) I think I have a lot of wishes that are not going to happen :o
Not going to happen for me either, Lisa. Doesn't really matter how close to a port you live anymore. Unless you have an "in" much larger than I certainly have, no one gets on those ships unless they're boarding. I know there are some who can manage this, but not me:( .

In the 'good old days' you could get on any ship. When I lived in NYC I would go down to the piers and get onboard any ship that was in port! I remember spending the entire afternoon on the QEII, enjoying drinks, etc. I think it was $5 to get on.

Sadly those days are over because I think it would be terrific if we could tour these ships (sort of like touring models of new homes):) .
IAnd with a ship that size, how many ports will it be able to dock? So that's leaves us tendering. That should be fun jockeying for position to tender in. Not my cup of tea!!!

I think I read somewhere five, with Fort Lauderdale being one of them. Jamaica is also building a pier that will accommodate Genesis ships.

I think I've mentioned this before, but I personally think this will be an entirely new concept in cruising ... the ship itself will be the destination and not the itinerary. A week-long cruise, I would bet, maybe will have only two port stops ... and one of them may be the private island of the cruise line. The whole point of getting on that ship will be to enjoy the unique amenities of the boat ... where you will find nowhere else.

Personally, it wouldn't be my cup of tea at all. But I can certainly see a big market for it.

Blue skies ...

And this is also the exact reason that RCI is building this ship class. The more they keep people on the ship, the more money they make on all of the things that cost extra. Each time RCI introduces a new class of ship there are more ways to spend money and I expect the same here.

Needless to say FLL would have to be one of them because the ship has to be able to dock where people embark:D . But tendering is my least favorite thing so unless I wanted to stay on the ship the whole time as you describe, this wouldn't work for me.

And if the ship is this large, it wouldn't be a cruise by my description. You wouldn't know you're on the ocean and unless you have a window or a balcony, you'd rarely see the sea.

So if I want the resort to my destination, I'll choose a resort with beachfront accommodations :).

If RCI is going to market cruises on the Genisis class ship as a destination in its self, then it will be not much different than going to Las Vegas. At least in Vegas the casino odds are more in the patrons favor!!

My thoughts exactly.

Even the itineraries this ship will be able to sail will be severely limited, so why not keep more people onboard? Can you imagine tendering, or even just trying to get breakfast at the Lido on that thing?! With that many people onboard, I would imagine there will be a lot of surcharge-only activities, if only to control the numbers of people in one area at a time.

Interestingly, I notice that reception to this idea on the Carnival board is pretty cold - most people seem to be in agreement with those who have posted here. In fact, quite a few are pleased that Carnival has nothing like this in the works, preferring to keep their Fun Ships as they are.
