Livorno and Civiteveccia Towns

Please can someone give some idea on what the towns of Livorno and Civiteveccia are like? Sadly, I don't intend to take any of the tour excursions here (my bad back can't survive the coach journeys) so - any suggestions for what to do for 2-3 hours in these towns?

In Civitavecchis last fall, we did not wish to go to Rome as we had been there previously. So we simply spent about 3 hours strolling along the waterfront and through the flea market. Many waterfront cafes for lunch or gelato. We then spent relaxing afternoon on ship by the pool. Livorno-you must get some type shuttle out of the large port area. City is large. We caught a train to Pisa (30 minutes away).

In Civitavecchia, we rented a car from Hertz (on the waterfront within very easy walking distance from where the shuttle drops you at the entrance of the port.) We drove to Civita di Bagneregio, of Rick Steve fame, but there are other towns within an easy drive, including Viterbo, Tarquina and Ostia Antica. As a matter of fact, there was a thread active in the last couple of days about how to get from Civitavecchia to Ostia Antica. Ostia also functions as the beach for Rome residents.

 

In Livorno, it is also possible to rent a car, and you could explore the Tuscan countryside. We took the train to Pisa and then a bus to Lucca. We took the train to return to Livorno from Lucca. You could also just take the train directly to Florence.

What transportation did you use to get from the port area to city of Livorno to catch the train? Does RCCL,if you know, provide transportation to the train? Thank you!

Hi - if its any help when we stopped at Livorno the last time (2 years ago) there was a little information stand set up specially for the ship at the port by the local tourist office. They were giving out maps and helpful advice. We walked a short way to the town where we caught the bus to the train station then got the train to Pisa. When we got to Pisa, we went to the tourist office where they told us which bus to get to "The Tower". We did it all for a fraction of the prices the ship was charging.

It depends on where your ship docks. Celebrity offered $10 pp bus transportation to the drop off point in Livorno. A nice young man at the bus ticket place (not on the ship) told us we could walk to same point in about 15 minutes. We did. You then buy public bus tickets at the tobacco shop and ride the bus to the train station. We actually took the train to Lucca, spent about 3 hours there, rode the bus back to Pisa (it drops you right in front of the Tower) spent about an hour there, walked to Pisa station (30 minutes), and rode train back to Livorno. Great day.
