A general question about excursions

I hope this is the right place to post this question...here goes!

Both the excursions we are planning to book in St. Maarten and St. Thomas are ones where you can be dropped downtown and have to make your way back to the ship at your own expense.

Not that a couple of cab rides are an issue, but are there any availability and/or security issues to be concerned about? Should we continue on the transport provided back to the ship?

I am getting a general idea that these are not issues, but a more specific answer would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

In SXM, there is a water taxi that will take you from downtown right to the ship dock.

In STT, safari bus taxis are plentiful and will transport you to Havensight from downtown for a couple two three $ pp.

Have done for years and have no "security" concerns but I am observant/cautious/conscientious. In other words...it is fine just pay attention to where you are, your valuables, and your surroundings. I have no problem doing this by myself even. (female)
