puddytat Posted May 1, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 1, 2008 Heard not all cruise ship is permitted to actually enter Glacier Bay National Park even the iterneray says Glacier Bay. Rare Coral Posted May 2, 2008 #2 Share Posted May 2, 2008 I am sure they are the same ones who have it this year - HAL, Princess, NCL, a few Carnival sailings. Those who have it, keep renewing it which prevents lines such as Celebrity and RCCL from getting any of the permits. If the itinerary says it - you most likely will not have a schedule change "before the cruise". Periodically this happens but not that often. Once cruising, there is always a chance that a ship can't make it but most ships have no problems getting into Glacier Bay. It doesn't have the same issues that Hubbard glacier has. For example - Princess has been doing the same North and South routes for years and they all include Glacier Bay. They are not going to change this itinerary. They may not make Glacier Bay on a particular day due to weather or mechanical issues but they are not going to change that itinerary.

Is iternery Glacier Bay National Park the same thing as Glacier Bay? See both term mentioned and worry about the latter one doesn' actually enter the national park area. puddytat Posted May 2, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted May 2, 2008 Actually wish that we would be addicted to Alaska. We will move to Northwest region and Alaska will be the most convenient cruise destination. That's why want to make the first trip wonderful. Coral; As you said there is not much of a chance that any of the cruise lines that have permits to enter Glacier Bay will not keep renewing their permits indefinitely. The reason that Celebrity and RCL can not go to this prime destination in Alaska is that they were caught several years ago illegally dumping waste into the waters. In the past there has been a problem getting to Hubbard Glacier in the months of May and June because of the heavy ice flows. For anyone thinking about an Alaskan I can highly recommend taking a cruise that does go to Glacier Bay.

While several years ago no (2002?), we were blocked from going to Hubbard the first week in July. I agree with your advice!
