Why do people get irritated with Diamond/+ members for not waiting in line as much?

Recommended Posts

I remember when I told my son he was D+ he looked at me and said, "ok". In other words he was not impressed. What impressed him is the opportunity to take another cruise!

I would hope that anyone that has ever met me on a cruise never thought for one second what my status is, or catorigized me as a snob because I cruise a lot. Do I take advantage of the perks, you bet! Is C&A a society or marketing tool? It's actually both (or has become both), but as a marketing tool it is effective because I keep coming back.

My point is and I have seen it a few times, It does not really matter if you have cruised once or 50 times, you still put your pants on one leg at a time and while I agree that if you have joined a club, or acheived a certain level in business or through travel you are entitled to the perks; that should never mean that you lose your humanity in the process.

I hope my son never looses sight of that...(me either)

A while back on another board , someone was spouting off about their status on a certain line, and that for 20 years they have been cruising in such and such a category and they are entitled to this and that blah blah blah.

They were incensed that on their recent cruise their personal butt kisser didn't fan them, peel them a grape and call them "master" fast enough one day. *LOL* well not exactly, but something as trivial as that.

Of course this started a tirade on the dumbing down of passengers , and that cruiseing isn't what it was in the "Golden Era", and now they will be forced to go to the higher end lines .

And you just have to wonder if this sets them off , how do they deal with lifes real problems.

Actually, DFW and MIA both have elite and first/business class security lines. I know DFW has them in Terminal D, as I have used it when flying to London last year. Term. A and C have them as well but I'm not sure when they are open. I used one in Term A before but last month on a flight to Chicago, it was closed.

MIA has them on Concourses D and E.

AA VIP lines are located in DFW, MIA, Chicago-Ohare, Boston, LAX, and NY-LaGuardia.

Thanks for all the great information. Once in awhile we accumulate enough miles to upgrade to first class as was the case when we flew thru LAX. We would not have known about the special security line if the curbside check-in man hadn't directed us to it.

We suspect it is probably the same way at many of the other airports you listed. Evidently, if you don't know about the special security line you can easily miss it. Again thanks for the clarification. It sounds like a common practice at major airports.

Just my experience , but most first class, V.I.P , high roller entrances, check in lines and such are kind of out of the way from your common areas in airports, hotels, and casinos.

Especially in places where you tend to get a lot of celebrities who want their privacy and security.

Most airports have a seperate line that allows crew members, first class passengers and VIP passengers to move ahead of other passengers, but still uses the same TSA personel. I have never heard anyone complain when those people are ushered thru the "fast lane".

A couple of years ago, I read on this board about a cruiser who was throwing her weight around and trying to get ahead of people in line because she was "gold." A D or D+ spoke up and ended her behavior. Pretty funny story.

hey all,

I'm not a diamond + cruiser (I've only been cruising a couple of times).

I actually disagree with the above response.

I think that people who have "earned their stripes" so to speak by travelling so many times, do deserve some special perks. They've stood in their share of lines to work their way up to the perk of being allowed to jump the line...and annoying as that may be for those of us who don't get that perk...I hope that if I do that many cruises, one day I will enjoy those same benefits.

I do think they should have an entirely separate entrance area so that the rest of us don't have to watch people go ahead of us though.

just my two cents.

:)

Sorry to disagree but the perk is priority boarding not priority entrance to the terminal from the street. I am Diamond status as well but my Diamond status applies to the ship, not life.

I’m not sure why this is such an extremely sensitive issue to people—it seems to be really getting some snippy responses.

I could see if the OP (me) or the posters said “I am Diamond so I deserve better than you and I should have people tripping over me to make me happy”, or if I was totally aggressive and angry because I had to wait somewhere, but NO ONE has said that so far.

What started this whole thing was that I posted wondering why another poster was irritated that a Diamond Plus member was annoyed that she was waiting in line too long or whatever. It is MY fault b/c I overlooked the fact that they lady in the posting was OUTSIDE in the sun. I didn’t realize that part.

I never meant to imply that I am better than anyone else and trust me, I never have and never will believe that.

I’ve read most of these posts and have not read one person that was saying they should get special treatment in LIFE like some impied. I read no one who seemed self-absorbed or rude, so I really don’t understand why all the snotty replies.

The only one that was snotty would be myself—and that’s because I became impatient with someone who I felt was attacking me for no reason. And for that—I apologize for.

I didn’t mean to open a can of worms. I learned my lesson! Not everyone is as open minded and fair as I thought.

I think the perks they have set aside for d/d+ members are great...there needs to be benefits for those that are loyal to the line...but I do get annoyed by those that seem to think those benefits arent enough...they want priority everything...on Monarch recently there was a D member that came into the theater for tendering 45 minutes after everyone else and wanted to just walk right on the tender b/c of their status...

Stacy ,

I understood your post very well. And it was exactly as you described it. And as soon as you realized that the priority thing didn't extend to the outside line you acknowledged that. In no way did you try and come off as better than anyone else.

I do sympathize with you on the snarky remarks made to you about your age. Its like you are 27 and you have no opinion. If you were snotty, it was just in defense of what was written to you.

I am a tad older than you , but I took a flaming on one of the other boards by one of the revered old guard there because of a question I asked (completely innocent).

Don't let it get you down. This forum is a wonderful place to chat, meet nice people and share info and stories about cruiseing.

Yes occcasionally you will meet a rotten egg, or the God Almighty of Cruiseing (Thou Shalt Do On Your Cruise Exactly As I Do, or Thou Shalt Be Banished To Another Line ) *LOL* :)

But those people are far and few between.

Enjoy your time here , and most definately enjoy your cruises :)

Stacy: I agree with Babyher, I don't think that you did anything wrong. However, when you read CC you will see that the majority of OPs end up getting from a few the same kind of treatment that you have received.

These boards tend to be on the anonymous side, so some people behave differently and have more courage than they would if they were face to face with you. For some, it is the only taste of power that they have in their lives and they love to exert it.

We have been Diamond + cruisers for some time and appreciate the available perks. But we've noticed that when checking-in, there are now so many platinum, diamond and diamond + members, that sometimes the non-priority line is shorter than the priority boarding line.

Actually, on our last cruise, our friends were diamond status and we weren't. We actually got on the boat before they did.

We are now diamond status and the small perk of getting special line, isn't the perk that excites me. We all eventually get on the ship.

Since you did quote my post, I can assume this post is directed to me.

I am not at all defensive about my Diamond status, the perks or anything about this issue at all.

I simply replied to the specific post that I quoted in disagreement, which wasn't yours. There was no intention to be rude to anyone, just my thoughts as asked in your original post on this thread.

Also, I made no reference to you, your age or anything you stated in any of your posts so I am confused as to why you quoted me at all.

I agree Diamond status is a perk, and definitely deserves and earns one priority status. I believe I've earned perks others shouldn't "just get". I specifically disagree that priority starts at the curb.

I'll repeat myself just to be clear for anyone reading your post directed at me.

As far as embarkation/debarkation I believe my Diamond status and any benefits or perks that acompany it applies to treatment onboard the ship and the boarding/check in process once inside the terminal itself.

Anythig outside of the cruise itself, I referred as "life" meaning prior to or after the cruise (which to me would mean Diamond status does not apply, and I am just like everyone else). Maybe that was a bad choice of words to use for you, but I don't believe that I'm being rude or snotty to anyone.

In the OP's original post he mentioned the words "pier agents". Aren't these local people from the port-of-call we are visiting? If they are it would seem to me that they don't give an owl's hoot what our status is. I am very proud to say that I am a "GOLD MEMBER" with two  cruise credits to my name so you can look for me at the very end of the line. :p

I have to agree with the majority. Once inside you can separate into different line but standing outside does not give anyone the right to jump lines. Outside we are all created equal.

Just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on this. I just read in the new thread “Live from the Serenade” where the OP was happy when a Diamond Plus member was told to go to the end of the line after she was irritated with waiting so long and conveyed to the Pier Agents that she shouldn’t have to wait b/c of her Crown and Anchor status.

I don’t understand the OP’s thinking.

I am younger (27) and am a Diamond Plus Member and have been since I was about 22. Both my parents and younger sister are Diamond Plus as well and one of the perks IS that once arriving at the pier—you should be directed into what used to be called “The Chairman’s lounge” to enjoy a more relaxed, air conditioned atmosphere, with refreshments available. Did this change? We know some people at the pier in Miami and are regular guests on the Majesty of the Seas (have been for years), and anytime we arrived—as long as the ship was cleared, we were directed to the lounge and able to chill there until boarding started. We were then the first ones on the ship. This even took place when our friends at the pier were absent, and I’ve seen others there as well, so I’m assuming this is normal procedure.

I’ve also had people say some not real kind things to my family and I before boarding, when we were taken to the front of the line and through security before everyone else due to our Diamond and then Diamond Plus status. Trust me, we are very warm and friendly people and certainly do not carry the “I’m better than you” attitude, but people have still been downright rude about it. I don’t understand that behavior and would never frown upon people that got to “go before me” or have a negative attitude about it.

So, are there any of you out there that agree with that Poster? May I ask what your thinking is on this? To be honest, we’ve paid enough $$ over the years to have these special perks, so I’m not sure why people really feel shorted or annoyed by it. Is it jealously?

Although I was not present, I agree with the Diamond Plus member boarding the Serenade that was unhappy having to wait with thousands of other people in the hot sun. Now, I’m not saying certain circumstances don’t warrant the need for that—believe me, I know the procedures and fully understand them—and I of course would never condone rude behavior--but I do feel that the Diamond and + members should be able to cut through some of the “line waiting”—and as far as I’m aware, that is normally policy anyway.

Thoughts?

I am the OP and it seems you may not have read my post clearly. We were booked in an Owner's Suite so we were entitled to the same perks as Diamond members. ALL passengers were waiting in the sun (some of us for 2 hours) to enter the (pier) building. As the line started moving the lady walked up to the front. She was not entitled to any priority entrance at the point. Once inside the building there were two separate lines and that's where the difference in priority check-in/boarding was. The lady had an attitude and I don't like people like that. I obviously paid more for my single cruise than many people pay for several and I managed to follow the rules. So why do you think the woman was entitled to enter before me?

I will be going on my second RCI cruise in October, so I'm no where near diamond status but would LOVE to be there at some point!

I think those with diamond status have EARNED their perks, and if one of those perks is to go to the "front of the line" then I certainly don't mind. It's too bad some people are rude to diamond status people. :(

Now, if a diamond status person, couple, or group walked by me and thumbed their nose at me then that's another story, ha ha! But just asking a staff member about going to the front, because they are diamond members, or having a "special lounge" to go to it's no big deal to me. They earned it.

Sorry, but no one was rude to the "lady". The rep told her she had to wait on line and SHE was the one that got rude to the rep.

I'm sure there are MANY folks waiting in line who know NOTHING about C&A and what that status can bring! (Only a very small percentage of cruisers actually are familiar with this site) So, had they know what was going on, they may strive to reach that status in the future--as it was, they thought the D+ folks were just being pushy and rude.

I am well aware of C & A, Diamond, etc. The lady was just rude.

A big part of the problem in this instance is that Pier 35 in San Francisco is just a wharehouse on a pier. It really is not set up as a normal cruise terminal as you would expect to see in other ports. It's in deplorable shape.

Had I not known about San Francisco, I would have walked to the front of the line and asked about a diamond line. I'm sure that the D+ person was not aware that the doors to enter were closed until they walked to the front. I don't see any problem with them asking.

I totally agree. No harm in asking. It's the little scene she made after being told that she had to get on line.

On a ship with thousands of people, it really won't make any significatn difference if they move a few people to the front of the line based on their status.

I've never been in a line outside the building. If there was a line, then you probably go their too early (or too late).

It's not necessarily a "few" people. There are over 200 Diamond members on this cruise plus the suite people (only 2000 on total on the ship). We arrived at the pier - time wise - based on the info received from CC members. The ship happened to be undergoing "a deep cleaning" so we had to wait.

I agree with you 100% , up to the doors of the terminal everyone has to wait the same as everyone else, no matter what status or cabin they are in.

The OP of this thread (Stacy) did not know that .She belived that there was a special line to get into the terminal for Diamond etc pax.

Several other posters pointed out to her that this is not so. The OP acknowledged this and then understood why you were upset with the woman that tried to cut the line

TahoeBob--

Don't worry about it--it's not a big deal. Thanks for apologizing, though.

The only person I really felt was VERY rude was the person that scoffed at my age and acted though I had no reason to speak or have an opinion OR have the $$ to pay for cruises b/c of it. Implied that I was lying that I paid for the cruises I've been on. I don't even know the person's screen name ~ and I don't care--to be honest with you. I see those people as unhappy people and actually feel sorry for them.
