help! husband jumping ship.......

Recommended Posts

we just sailed on fos in april and my husband wasn't too thrilled about the whole experience.we have sailed twice before, once on aos and once on jos and he liked those trips better. this time around we ran into some snags like the food being overly cold in the windjammer a number of times, my husband did mention this to the person who greets you when you come and go and he polietly said he"d look into it, he had a go around with a crew member when they lost one of our suitcases on the first day, i must admit the guy was rude to us and the food wasn"t up to par some days in the windjammer but heck we were on vacation and i was willing to overlook a few things, also my husband felt that if they were going to build the ships larger they should have made the adult pool area a bit bigger, the chairs were pretty close together and really hard to get into a row if you were lucky enough to get a spot. i think all in all we had a nice trip but now he wants to do a land vacation and is looking into breezes in the bahamas. has anyone stayed there and whats your opinion of the place as opposed to cruising?

As much as I like cruising, a nice beach vacation in a warm, inviting place is good for me!

I have to agree with your husband that the food isn't as it used to be...and while that's not the entire reason we cruise, it is a big part of it!

Give the land-based vacation a try! You'll get a bigger room (for the money) and more room to spread out! (I agree that there should be at least 12 inches in between the lounge chairs! They are WAY too close together, necessitating rearranging of the deck space!)

We love to cruise (actually I think that I like it better than my husband!), but we also like to take land vacations too. We've had two cruises this year, one in January and one in March with family members. Now we've booked a vacation for the beginning of August in Playa del Carmen at an all-inclusive resort. This is our second time to go to Playa del Carmen. If you're going to book a land vacation, all-inclusive is the only way to go. I love being able to walk right on to the beach and they have a wonderful pool area. Plus, you can book all the excursions, i.e. snorkeling, scuba diving, Xel-Ha, Tulum, etc., that you can do on a cruise. Food (free room service too!) and alcohol are included...as a matter of fact, you have a bar set up in your suite. On this vacation we're going with a group of friends. We stay pretty busy so we're definitely not bored!

There are many things about cruising that leave things to be desired...but the concept is great...if RCI and other cruise lines would follow what they do at Disneyland and Disney World...they would have this industry in their pockets...it all has to do with catering to the right ideas...Disney is full of children...and yet you can go there and find a lot to do as an adult...rules are enforced at Disney...I find they don't want to offend the passenger on cruise ships...and the passenger is doing the wrong thing...like smoking in a none smoking area...or allowing the children in the casino...many complaints go unresolved...or ignored (even worse)...no comment or complaint at Disney is ever ignored...they sould send all there PR people to Disney for a week to see how things are done there...they really listen to their guests...and so should RCI!

I truly think that a land vacation with an all inclusive resort is the way to go for the two of you.

You have tried the ship experience.......and do not expect any better inthe future...........with your attitude. There are many land based vacations that would suit the two of you........and I know that you would be so much happier.

God bless..........and find the right thing that makes both of you happy!!

Sorry your husband doesn't like cruising as much as you do. However, there are still many wonderful places to go for vacation that don't involve cruising. I haven't been to Breezes, though, so can't help you there. Have you tried Trip Advisor to read some reviews? Just a warning, though, you will see horrible reviews of just about any hotel in the world there as there will always be people who have bad experiences or those who are never happy with anything. Just look to see if MOST of the reviews are positive or negative. Good luck!

A little change is good once in a while. We do plenty of land vacations throughout the Caribbean and Mexico in addition to cruises. There are plenty of great AI's in these areas, just go to the owner of this site - tripadvisor.com and have a look around.

Wherever did the notion that a stay at an AI is just "laying around the pool or beach" come from? Everything that is available to cruisers (and more) is available to land vacationers as well. Like cruising, your land vacation can be as active or inactive as you want it to be.

Admittedly I have not been to Breezes in the Bahamas but I am very familiar with the owner, Superclubs. Some info would suggest this property is not one of their better efforts however check it out for yourselves on the net.

I also like my land vacations....I have been to Breezes Bahamas and although I really enjoy it, from what you said, I don't think you would be happy. This is a 3 star all - inclusive. Someone else mentioned the parent company Superclubs..they also have their "Lido" resorts shich are very upscale with many restaurants to choose from...I think you would be happier at a resort like this. Riu Palace in Punta Cana is fantastic as is Excellence resort. I would recommend looking at at least a 4 star all-inclusive, so you have the choice of restaurants on property.

In 2005, we decided we needed a break from cruising, so we vacationed at an AI in the Bahamas (not Breezes). While it was lovely, we grew bored very quickly. Granted, we had two teenagers with us who need lots of activity, but even my husband and I were tired of it by the 3rd or 4th day. I'd say that for a long weekend, it would be fine, but not for 7 days because of the lack of variety and activity.

Maybe Freedom was just too large a ship for you, and maybe you could consider going back to a Voyager or Radiance class ship.

I'm in the same boat right now (no pun intended). But my wife wants to alternate w/ some land based vacations. I just can't stand the thought of not being at sea. I understand that you can get all-inclusives on land and even have you alcohol and everything covered. But theres just something about being at sea and falling asleep at night and waking up looking out your balcony door and beine in a new place. We are cruising next week and I have coaxed her into booking the Adventure OTS for next May. Don't know what I'm gonna do after that though???

Any suggestions?????

My hubby and I went to Breezes a few years back. Then it was in need of big renovations. The hallways of the hotel were very loud and the pool and hot tub were not very clean. Food was so-so and we were not impressed with the whole trip.

I can speak from experience from borth cruising and land vacations. I think there is more to do on a ship to be honest. There is always something going on whereas on an island someplace you have to find your own ways to stay occupied. I personally love Aruba. Stayed at the Divi All-Inclusive and loved it! But for me, I am a beach person and so being on the beach all day enjoying the weather and scenery is right up my alley. And, there, you can easily rent a vehicle and explore the island in one day as it is a small island.

Now, have also been to the Royal Plantation AI in Ocho Rios Jamaica. Very nice...beach butlers bring cocktails to you with a simple wave of a little flag. But, there isn't much to do inside the resort. You really need to find things to do in Ocho Rios and at the time, I just didn't feel safe outisde the borders of the resort. You hear so may things about Jamaica but then again I read about others who love it. You just need to experience. But, by the end of the week in Jamaica, we were bored with the food and ready for good American food. The food there was good, just that the menu never changed.

I like both cruising and land vacations but I think I like land vacations better. Enjoy whatever you decide to do!! :)

The Bahamas just don't do it for me. Here's an idea. Vacation here where I live, in southwest Florida. Naples is beautiful, Ft. Myers beach is ok, and Sarasota is also a nice place to spend some time. I couldn't think of spending more than an afternoon in the Bahamas. It's kinda creepy to me.

I love both! If I need a totally relaxing break then we usually go on a land/beach type vacation.

My hubby isnt keen on cruising, but he goes along with it because me and the kids like it.

If you can stretch out your $ then Sandals Negril is fantastic, its expensive at the outset but everything is included - even scuba diving. My hubby has asked after our next cruise if we can go back to Negril for our vacation, Im going to try Beaches this time becasue we will have the kids with us.

Im sure you will have a great time whatever you decide :D

We do more land trips than cruising because we own timeshares. We don't do AIs because of the cost. With a kitchen in our unit, and lots more space than a hotel unit, I can save a ton of money. Granted, I'm one that doesn't mind doing some cooking, especially when it allows us to spend more on fun things to do.

AIs are basically designed to keep you on the grounds, which is great if that's what you want. We would rather explore the area.

Go ahead and try a land trip to pacify the hubby. it's only one vacation, you can go right back to cruising if you want!! I would certainly go somewhere that has interesting things to see and do in the area.

Let us know what you decide, and then, once you do it, report back on how you both liked it.

We did Breezes in Bahamas for a day trip off of a cruise. It was a great day, and I would recommend it to anyone. But, I don't know if we would stay there a week. A day no problem, but the hotel looked a little older, and didnt' seem like there were so many activitives to keep you busy for more than a day. We've stayed at resorts before and love them, but I think this one is better for just one day.

My husband and I are avid cruisers but we understand where your husband is coming from. We decided to try an AI for 3 nights just to get the feel. Liked it but we have not been back to one. We keep cruising. The thing is we loved our stay at the resort it was to us not as exciting as a cruise. We lounged at the beach and went boogie boarding, walked the beach and walked around town. Went to the town mall and had an exciting time shopping. Met some other people from Nebraska so that was cool. The room was drop dead gorgeous and had wonderful shampoo, conditioner, body soap, face soap and lotion. The open bar was nice and there were a lot of restaraunts to choose from in the resort and local restaraunts were great too. I don't think you will have a bad time at all in a AI as long as you are adventurous and explore the area. They also have excursions you can reserve. My recommendation...just because everyone I know has gone there and loved it. Moon Palace resort in Cancun. I went to Puerto Vallarta and liked it. The Palace resorts are marble floors and tables with couches and a hammock for two on your balcony along with a jacuzzi for two in your room. It's a couples type resort, especially if you go to a adults only one. Have fun.

As we have our first cruise booked I can't compare the two. HOwever we have done many land vacations and just love them. You may want to check out the "Palace resorts" in Cancun or now in Punta Cana. We have stayed at several of their properties. Also, as far as being bored, it all depends what you make of it. On most of our trips we were with other couples. There are always things going on at the pool. (pool volleyball, games, limbo, water aerobics, beach games, etc) But you have to get up and get involved. Also the resort we have stayed at have a show each night, many with audience participation. We usually go for 7 nights and have never been bored. We spend 3-4 days just around the beach and pool participating in the activities and the other day to two we do an excursion of the island. Some resorts will have a couple of excursions included in the AI. And just remember to check how many restaurants the resort has before deciding. If you stay at the resort and eat there for 7 days you want to have 3-5 choices so you are not eating the same thing everyday.

I agree! Secrets Capri in PDC is awesome, we stayed there last year.... Next A/I is RUI Cabo San Lucas, check it out!

You'll have a great time in Cabo! My daughter and son-in-law went to Cabo for their honeymoon and stayed at the RIU Palace. They loved it!! They stayed for 6 days and 5 nights and could have stayed longer (would have but he's an officer in the Navy and had to go back!). I would also like to go there! I've heard good things about all the RIU resorts. We've stayed at the Iberostar Quetzal in Playa del Carmen which is in the Playacar district. It's very nice and they've worked hard to preserve the culture and jungle! There were monkeys sometimes swinging on our patio! This time we're staying in town at The Royal. It's newly renovated and close to shopping with a beautiful beach area. Looking forward to it!

I did the excursion there when I was on the Majesty last year. Talk about boring!! We actually left early and took a bus ride back into town. Biggest waste of $100pp. I couldn't imagine paying thousands of $$ to stay there!
