Calling to canada from barbados??

Hello all... i am headed on a Southern carribean cruise in August..

Iwant to be able to call home once a day to check on my 2 little girls..

I refuse to pay $6.99 on board the ship :eek: Has anyone dealt with this before?

Are you able to buy calling cards in the ports and do they have payphones you can call on??

I have this posted else where but was advised by another CC member to post under each port and I may get better answers??

We were in Barbados in Jan. I was able to get a good signal on my cell. phone to call the U.S. I have Verizon if that helps.

In just about every port in the Caribbean there are pay phones as soon as get off the ship. Phone cards are usually pretty cheap.

 

When I need to make a call I just use my cellphone.

 

When you get on the ship ask your waiter/cabin steward or someone in the casino where to go to get the cheapest phone cards. They know all the spots like the back of their hands.

Your roaming-capable cell phone will pick up

one of two local services on the island.

Cable& Wireless or Digicel.

To the OP, whatever you do....DO NOT call collect from these phones. The amount of $$$ charged per minute to the land line you're calling is outrageous! I would suggest a phone card as well--or you can always call from your cell phone. If one of your stops is either San Juan or St. Thomas, use it there to avoid a large bill.
