Catalina Beaches?

Is there a beach in Catalina walkable from the ship? If not, what transportation is easiest there?

Actually you can't walk from the ship anywhere in Catalina. It is a tender port. But yes you can walk from the pier to the beach. But get there early it is a tiny beach area.........

There's a "beach" within walking distance from where the tender drops you off. Walk to the right as if you were walking to the Avalon casino and you will hit it. Keep in mind that instead of sand, it has rocks (like some of the beaches in the French Riviera).

Funny story about Catalina. We stopped there on a cruise back in '01. Some of the people in our group decided to hike up one of the hills to get a better view of the harbor and some photos of the ship at anchor. It's a pretty good hike and by the time they got up there a fog bank had rolled in. Visibility was about 15 ft. After they gave up and walked back down.....the fog had lifted.

Hey all!

That small beach at the main part is not the only beach at Avalon Catalina.

There is a BIGGER beach with nice sand there.

But, you need to walk PAST the Casino building...

Most people don't realize it's there.

Also it's a good place to go, during the peak times when that main little beach is crowded with people.

But then you can't pop in and out of Luau Larry's for a nice cold one:p

Hee! Great minds think alike!

They have a great little bar and restaurant right there.

You can sit on the bar stool, prop your feet up, and be right there on the beach at the same time!

LOL! That is one thing they aren't lacking is a place with a view for a cold one.......

You can't get a golf cart over there.

But, what you can do is walk further left (when you are standing at the pier looking at the city) and see how it goes.

There is even a slightly smaller, but usually less crowded beach area there on the way (it's to the left of a little ice cream shop).

If it seems like 3 year old can't go more, then that's a nice little spot to stop.

I'd say it's maybe a 10 minute (or less) walk from the pier to Descano Beach, so I'm not sure how that is for a 3 year old?

There is also a nice little lawn/grass area there that I've seen families set up on their towels like a little picnic.

You have a couple of nice options now though.
