Staff using guest services

I was wondering what part of the staff can use guest services. I saw many of the staff at the clubs, bars, buffet, and at the gym. It usually seemed like upper level staff? Just wondering how this worked.

I also saw many staff w/ people without an "official" name tag. I'm not sure if they were going out with guests of the ship or they had their own guest?

when they are on their "off" time, I believe they are allowed to do just about anything, as long as they have their name tag. Many of them are working to send money home, so most do not want to waste it in the nightclubs, etc. I have seen on my last two cruises where a crewmember's family had come to take the cruise and on their "off" time they were with their family, who would not have name tags.

There is a 'clip level', some of the folks you never see anyway and many of the stewards, waiters, bartenders, etc., can only relax in the 'crew areas', but some of the higher level crew, officers, CD, entertainers, etc, can relax in the passenger areas. I read about that somewhere, but can't remember the exact details.

Generally, officers, entertainers, gift shop personnel and other "above decks" folks have run of the ship. The below deck crew, stewards, assistants, waiters, etc. are not permitted to be above deck unless doing their job.

When not on duty, most staff officers and other personnel are not required to wear name badges or uniforms. Senior officers usually always wear them, however.

Most cruise lines have very strict rules about employees mixing with passengers. Any indiscretion can lead to being fired.

DJ Eddy gave a good breakdown of the different crew levels a few months back. Thanks Eddy! :)

The crew/staff/officers hierachy works like this...

Crew

crewmembers are the hearbeat of the ships, the most hardworking employees... housekeeping, waiters, bar staff, hotel stewards, cleaners, painters, tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, joiners etc). They can only go into guest areas to work, if they want guest area priveleges (they want to go the disco on a formal night for example) they have to apply through their supervisor or dept head to the staff captain who will approve or decline the request. I have seen bartenders and stewards with guest area priveleges but this is usually for one evening and is on merit.

Crewmembers can also only eat in the crew mess and are to stay in crew areas when off duty. They are allowed out into the ports of call providing they are not working.

Staff

Staffmembers are the hospitality, entertainment & sub-contracted staff which include... (pursers, shore-ex, photographers, IS managers, singers, dancers, DJs WAHOOOOOOO, Karaoke, club 02 & social hosts, CD, ACD, art auctioneers, steiners (spa), gift shop.

Staff members have guest area priveleges and we are allowed to bars, to watch the shows & to eat on Lido at lunchtimes. Guests always come first, we have to make sure we are not impeding on any guests whilst in guest areas and are not allowed to join any lines on lido... also we're not allowed to sit on bar stools (even if the bar is empty... still don't quite understand that one?)

Staffmembers are allowed to eat in the crew mess or the staff mess and are allowed out in the ports of call providing they are not working.

Officers

Officers are pretty much the same as staff, same priveleges etc. Officers have to wear their formal uniform whenever they are in guest areas. The only extra priveleges officers get is their own dining room with their own made to order menu... and they are aloowed in the casino if they have family sailing where crew & staff are not. Officers cannot gamble in the casino but they can accompany family into the casino.

There is only one crew bar (2 on destiny class ships) and there is no hierachy in the crew bar, crew, staff & officers are all allowed in there

While I can't comment about who you might of seen or who they were with, I can tell you that the rules are very strict and no crew member would risk their jobs being where they were not allowed, or who they were not supposed to be with, so it is not a thing to worry about.

While I'm not sure what the rules are, there was one day my husband and I were in the gym of the Inspiration. At first there was only one other person in there who was a crew member as evidenced by his name tag. You would have thought he was in there by himself the way he behaved. His grunts and groans while on the eliptical were absolutely comical. I was beginning to think he needed a moment alone. When he finished (on the eliptical), he let out a loud "OHHHH, SH*TTTTTTTT!"

I was once in the dance club on an RCCL ship. An officer came in and sat next to me. After speaking for a while he offered me a "private tour" of the ship. I was with my brother in law, and he said "I'll Go", the officer said "no, this invitation is for her". I politely declined telling him I am very married and he should look into spending time with someone else if he was looking for "company".

He continued to watch me when I was dancing (with my brother in law). He kept saying he wanted "some of that". I finally convinced him he was barking up the wrong tree so he left the club.

Point is, they mingle, they participate, they get their invitations accepted, and declined. Doesn't bother me in the least. The more the merrier.
