Dream back in Hamilton

Watched her sail into Hamilton today, and there were no winds that would have precluded her sailing through the Town Cut. Norwegian Majesty is in St. George, as I saw her there yesterday. I wonder if Dream will be doing a duel port itinerary like past ships have done.

She's supposed to in St George for all three days and nothing has been changed on our itinerary to suggest anything different. I'd like it if we docked in both, and even if the ship stays in Hamilton the island is so small you can see all of it anyway. However - I would miss not being docked in St George at least one night. The Dream is just a lttle bit bigger than the Majesty, but this must make a difference in negotiating the Town Cut - no "wiggle room" so to speak if the conditons aren't ideal. Another issue could be the weather forecast on the day they leave - what happens if a front comes in and they can't get out! I would have no problems at all with being stuck there a few extra days, but I don't think NCL would like it!

Exactly right. On our last Majesty cruise to St. George the ship had to leave Thursday at 6pm rather than Friday at noon because of a forecast of high winds.

I'm sure we'll here about how poorly NCL handled this and how they must have gone to Hamilton instead of St. George because it was cheaper and blah blah blah...and as a result the food was awful and the service was terrible and the bedspreads were ugly and the captain needed a shave.

Excuse my ignorance, but I thought that ships weren't docking in Hamilton any more. Is this just because it couldn't go to St. George's? I thought I had read that if you were to "dock" in Hamilton, you would be tendered.

Thanks.

... I just called the local shipping agents and the Dream is in town again because of gusty weather forecast all week. She is significantly bigger than the Majesty and it's a tight squeeze through Town Cut so they're playing it safe. There's no problem with ships docking in Hamilton; it's just that we're getting ready for the day that all the regular callers are too big to go through Two Rock Passage and will be at Dockyard.

For future sailings, keep an eye on weather.bm.

No. . . Bermuda decided that no "contract" ships ( Explorer of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, NCL Dawn etc. . .) would be scheduled to dock in Hamilton.

There will be occasional callers (Amadea, Seven Seas Navigator, Club Med II, etc. . .) who are scheduled to dock in Hamilton though. . .

My sister just emailed me from The Dream. The trip to Hamilton was rough with some bad weather all the way. She is happy either way, weather Hamilton or St George. She has been having fun in the Casino. I am dying to hear all about it when she gets back. August 10th is not close enough for my turn.

A happy Dream cruiser? I don't believe it! Thank you!!! All this negativity is getting to me. I leave Sunday. I did have a chance to do a quick tour this past Sunday on it, and the ship looks fabulous! I'm wishing for calm seas, blue skies, and warm weather in Bermuda!!!

Personally, if I am at the mercy of the weather as to whether we'll dock at St. George's I might find another cruise to take this fall. I'm booked for October, and as we all know you run the risk of rough seas when you sail early - or late- in the season. I'll be watching to see when, or if, the Dream docks in St. George's, and how often.

Didn't NCL think about this beforehand?

True. The weather here is dismal again this week. Blame it on Mother Nature.

If larger ships than Dream can get thru the Two Rock Passage, the docks at Hamilton are just too small for them to berth. We do have industrial berth for very large container and car ships, but not nice for pax.

The No. 1 Shed that is beside one of the docks and served as Custom/Immigration Controls is shortly to be demolished, and without it ships cannot dock at that portion without letting pax loose unchecked.

'fraid you're wrong in your first paragraph ... the ships you mentioned are just too big to be able to dock in Hamilton.

We no longer have contract ships of the med/small size to dock at Hamilton, hence occasional callers. We had Celebrity Horizon and Zenith gracing Front Street Hamilton side by side (well, end to end) many summers until last year when they left Celebrity.

Usually May is a lovely month here, but this year's May has been lousy so far. It's still too cool for us to start using air conditioners, and our deep sea fishing date has been cancelled 3 times so far.

IMHO, with the weather as lousy as it is now, it's better (and safer) dor Dream to be docked at Hamilton than in St. George's - the shops are better and larger in Hamilton than St. George's.

Hope weather improves for next week!

Don't be too upset about the "river" crossings (we call the ocean "pond") - many are good, some are bad. Luck of the draw. When we sailed from New York to the Caribbean and back, both river sailings were smooth and they were in Dec/Jan.

I hope so too - for your and our sakes!!

Hope Mother Nature is fast asleep when you come to Bermuda in Oct!!

I have been to Bermuda 9 times on cruises. 4 times on the Royal Majesty (NCL Majesty before she was stretched), 2 times on the NCL Majesty, and 3 times on the NCL Crown.

The trip is usually rough because of the Gulf Stream (I think). I have learned my leason though of not travelling in May or September/October. In 2003 we were scheduled the week after Labor Day and got diverted to Canada (so that trip isn't counted in my 9) because of hurricane Fabian (I think). So, we decided to try again and that is when we travelling during the beginning of May. We had one good day and the rest of the time it was windy and rainy. I felt bad, because both cruises were with my 2 bff's and they had never been to Bermuda. Every other trip has been awesome.

So, in my opinion it isn't the ship, it is the weather. But this is just my opinion.

Yes. . . you are right about the size, not being able to dock in Hamilton. I was just relaying what I read HERE in the Royal Gazette ;) . . . I sometimes don't type as correctly as my brain thinks  :( . . .

Ooops. . .

"Plans for the 2008/09 cruise ship schedule, which included no contract ships docking in Hamilton and a reduced number stopping in Dockyard and St. George's, were revealed by Government at a Chamber of Commerce meeting earlier this month."

I love Bermuda so much. . It doessn't matter to me where we dock. . as long as I am in lovely Bermuda !
