Does the terrorism and threats in Spain cause you to rethink you travel plans?

Recommended Posts

With the new threats of terrorism in Spain, is it causing you to rethink you cruise travel plans? I had been looking at three cruises for next year. One of which was the Med. cruise sailing from Barcelona.

To be honest, it has affected my thinking as to if I wanted to travel to Spain. At the very least, if we do choose to take the Med. cruise, I'll add the terrorist rider to our travel insurance policy. If there is a travel advisory issued that would nullify the travel policy then I just won't go.

So has this affected anyone else's thinking?

My children are 13 and 14 and I have told them both I would rather they die at age 25 in a terrist bombing in Erurope than live to a ripe old age and never leave Forest County, Mississippi. Go and enjoy...

I voted yes,I am no lomger considering travel to Europe.
And while I will not stop traveling, I think it is prudent to stay away from hot spots. Not going to Iraq anytime soon either.I take travel advisories seriously.
Now,having said that. Our daughter and her DH are in
England at the airforce base. And we have we have not seen them in a year.If he is not allowed a leave soon,we may consider that trip.We also have a 4 yo DS we must consider.
Also, the company I worked for for over 20 years will be serving at the summer Olympics, and have been asked to go.This is a free trip with spending money, and my desicion on that is up in the air.

Don't ever be afraid to travel anywhere at any time. The terrorists will have won if everyone is afraid to go anywhere. We went to Barcelona about 3 months before the Olympics were held there. It is a fantastic city and well worth seeing. The only terrorist related thing there was getting the car trunk checked as we drove into the underground car park at El Cortes Inglesas department store in the centre of the city. Go for it.

Oops...Mrs Prouse would kill me for that spelling. That should read "terrorist" and "Forrest County"...

Right now I don't travel to Barcelona for another 17 months. Alot can happen in that time, all of which I hope are postive things for this country, the world and it's people. So I selected "not yet, but maybe".

More than anything I want to see my two dayghters get married and have their children. So if that means I feel better staying home in the U.S. than traveling abroad I really don't mind the grounding.

We're scheduled to do a Brilliance crossing at the end of April. I did write RCCL and asked if the recent terrorist activity in Spain will alter their initenary. Their response was:

"Regarding your inquiry, the top priority of Royal Caribbean is the safety of our guests and employees. We closely monitor all world events and at this time have not made any changes to your itinerary.

Thank you for choosing Royal Caribbean International.

Corey Richburg
Customer Service Representative"

They don't see a problem yet. We are still going and I assume if all hell breaks loose in Spain, the cruise line will make the appropriate changes.

Come on guys, it can happen anywhere at anytime. The media is great at messing with our minds. There are so many places we wouldn't go if we took all threats seriously. What about Disneyland...the Super Bowl, Las Vegas...the list goes on and on!!!!!!!! We're cruising out of Barcelona August 28th and I expect "smooth sailing." My parents have informed us that they will NOT get on any trains at any of the ports though. I'm hoping they will change their minds by then. Hang in there everyone!

There is still a difference in "it can happen anywhere" and traveling to an area where it is already happening.

So you wouldn't go to say...New York? or Washington DC? Or would you have a time limit as to how long ago the act took place? I just refuse to live like that.

Absolutely no changes in our plans. Living near Washington DC, and having friends who were effected by the events of 9/11, DH and I decided on that day that we would live each day and not let terrorists win. We are cautious when we travel, but we still travel. If we do not stand united against them, they win. I refuse to do that.

United we stand! God Bless America!

I would not go to New York,if they had continued to fly airplanes into buildings.I probably would not have given Spain a second thought, had a second one not been found, and the events
looking like they may be escalating.I never said I was not going to travel. But having a 4 YO,I do have responsabilites.I will not go into an area in turmoil, and for the time being, thats how I see that area.
Remember, there were also thwarted attempts on the rail system in Dec and Feb.
I was in NY,NY 5 months following 9-11,but I was confident that my Country was doing the best it could to keep us safe.I am not that confident in other countries.

Living in NY I am in danger everyday, and I am not moving. And after what happened to my nephew, I think dying in a car is more likely than at the hands of a terrorist.

I am also still considering a Barcelona Cruise next year. There were still a lot of cruise ships going to Turkey after the unrest there, even though some companies removed it from their itineraries. I feel that if the cruise lines believe they cannot provide adequate security they will remove that port. Until that happens I will go there, be a little careful, not advertise the fact that I am a tourist and have fun!

Would you believe we have a friend (an American) who lives in Spain and is afraid to travel to the US with his wife and son. I don't understand his reasoning - He hasn't come home for the past three years.

Last year we were in Scotland around the start of the Iraq war. We felt safe there since terrorist hadn't been blowing up the rails and trains. Spain seems to be a different story with us. In Spain, they've made some pretty specific threats to continue doing what they've started.

Would I travel to NY or Washington? Yes, but I feel a little more secure with our government than I do with the Spanish government. Maybe not the smartest thinking but it's what I'm comfortable with.

As far as Europe goes I'd still feel comfortable traveling to the U.K. In fact, we are hoping to spend a week in Ireland next year.

The major difference today from a few weeks ago is that if I do travel to Europe, I'll be taking out the insurance that has the terrorism rider with it. I take out hurricane coverage for vacations to the East coast in hurricane season and I take out travel insurance everytime we cruise, especially in hurricane season. It would only be prudent to take out the terrorism rider for travel that holds that risk and would be financially difficult to swallow if the money were lost.

I guess in thinking about it, it would be a smart thing to take out the terrorism rider when traveling anywhere at this point.

Doug, I heartily agree, travel insurance is strongly recommended to protect your hard-earned dollar. Policies will refund your cruise fare if there is a terrorist act on your itinerary within 30 days of sailing...

I think it is great for people to say the terrorists 'win' if you don't go somewhere, etc.; however it is not given to everyone to be so brave. Many people have anxieties, PTSD, etc. that frighten them. To insinuate that the terrorists are 'winning' because these people can't bring themselves to go somewhere seems wrong to me, but that may just be me. I say do what feels right to you as an individual.
I know someone who really freaked out over Spain and decided to do a New England/Canada cruise this year instead. She is more comfortable with that and who could fault her? Even the cruise lines are promoting more "Homeland Cruising" these days.

Doug I don´t really understand you - you know Spain has lived with terror theats even prior to March 11. I am wondering if you knew before you booked that the ETA tried to hit tourist areas (happened last year) as this is one of Spains top incomes. Why didn´t that stop you booking if you are having a hard time with it now??!!??
The Spanish however have lived with these threats and act of barbarism for a lot longer than the USA and over the time have perhaps developed a different way of dealing with the problem. Please this is by no means being disrespectful regarding your person! However when one lives with a certain threat over a longer period of time it become an integrated part of daily life - and life does go on!

I haven't booked yet. My next cruise is in Eastern Caribbean and then the 3 day cruise to Ensenada. I am only considering a cruise departing from Spain along with Hawaii and Panama Canal.

To be honest, I didn't think that Spain had a larger terrorist problem. I know some servicemen that are stationed in Spain and terrorism has never been mentioned as an issue. So perhaps I've had my head in the sand on this one. But I really hadn't seen much news coverage of terrorism in Spain until the recent rail bombings.

I research cruise destinations I'm thinking about well in advance. I want to know what I need to be concerned about and what to look for. New Orleans doesn't bother me but, I feel I have a good grip on what to watch out for, where not to be and what is reasonably safe.

With everything going on in Spain, I was just curious HOW it was affecting others travel plans. I thought it might be an interesting poll to see how people feel. As it stands now, only about 26% of those who have responded say it will affect their plans, the rest don't seem to be letting it bother them to much.

If the new Spanish government gives in to the new terrorist demands, then I will not travel to Spain. Not because of the terrorist threat, but because I would not feel confident in the Spanish government doing what it could to protect American tourists.

One of my friends is a teacher and is leaving this week to go to Madrid with a group of high school students. When I asked if there were any thoughts of cancelling the trip due to the threat, she said since the parents couldn't get their money refunded, they wanted their kids to go. Go figure...............
