Just curious - what is NCL's current smoking policy? Does anyone know if that is going to change anytime soon? A lot of the cruise lines are changing their policies. Thanks

Here is what NCL says:

 

We want you to be comfortable on board, so public areas throughout all NCL ships are smoke free. If you smoke cigarettes, you can do so in your stateroom, on your balcony, in the casino or Cigar Bar (where available). If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Also, you can smoke cigarettes, pipes and cigars outside on open decks (just not around food venues, sport decks, kids' pool areas and other designated non-smoking areas).

Also, there is the cigar bar on most ships that does allow smoking.

That must be new because last year on the Dawn (right about this time), it was clearly posted that smoking was only permitted on the port side of the ship (open decks). There were no smoking signs all around on the starboard side. And, ash trays were only provided on the port side.

It might depend on where you're looking. On the Dawn last month there was smoking only on the port side on Deck 12. On deck 7 there were ashtrays near the doors on both sides. I didn't see any No Smoking signs on any other open deck, although no ashtrays either.

This is interesting info. On the Sun, there were ashtrays on both sides. And NCL's policy does not state anything about certain sides. Guess people just have to wait until they are on a specific ship to see what their policy is.

NCL was the first of the mass marketed lines to change. Their policy is a little different from some: BTW, I think only RCI/Celebrity have officially changed. NCL policy, no smoking in any public area except one side of the ship on deck. This can be retricted if management sees a reason. Also they allow smoking in the casino and the casino bar like all ships. On the ships that have cigar bars smoking is allowed. Most ships if they have a cigar bar it is very small. They do allow smoking in the cabins but if any smoke residue is left behind NCL will clean the cabin including drapes before the new occupants are permitted to use the cabin.

All NCL ships are smoking on port side only and yes, I have seen it enforced. You are right. Usually cruisingram is correct but this is one time when the policy is different than she thought. one more thing, many NCL ships do not have cigar bars, if they do, they only hold about 12 or so people. If there were ashtrays on both sides, someone moved them there. The smoking policy was announced close to a year ago and it did state port side only with management having the decretion to even refrain from allowing it there. I can't imagine what would create a situation that would convince them to not allow smoking on one side of the ship, but I guess it could happen.

 

BTW, to the Op, this subject comes up constantly and leads to nothing more than debates among the pro, con and inbetween cruisers. In fact it was a decision just a few days ago.

I would think that if only port side smoking was allowed on deck, then the ashtrays would be taken down and/or no smoking signs would be put up. While the port side rule may be in force on some NCL ships, it absolutely isn't on the Sun, unless they have changed it since March.

Yes, smoking is allowed on both the port and starboard sides on the Sun. But there are also non smoking areas specificed on both sides of open decks.

 

What's true for one ship is not necessarily true for all ships.

 

My rule of thumb, smoke near the ashtrays. Where there are ashtrays, smoking is allowed. The ashtrays aren't difficult to find.

I apologize, the Sun might be the exception as the policy of smoking only on port side was a big issue about 6 months ago and we found only one side of the deck smoking on the Star. I stand corrected Cruisngram. My guess is the ashtrays were never removed after the change thus passengers continue to smoke on both sides. I don't blame them, if there is an ashtray, to me, that means smoking is allowed. Maybe that is why so many love the Sun. ONly kidding guys!!!! but thanks for setting me straight.

I found the same thing when I was on board the Star last month. The only place where the "port side only" rule was clearly in effect was the immediate pool area. There might have been a few "no smoking" signs around the jogging track and on the upper sports deck, but that was it. All other outdoor areas, including most notably the promenade deck, were smoking on both sides.

Another reason I prefer cabins on, immediately above or immediately below the Promenade Deck. It's usually the deck I hang out the most on.

 

It's a shame that some ships don't have lounge chairs on the Promenade Deck. I wish they all do.

 

What's scares me about the design of the new F3 class ships, there doesn't appear to be a Promenade Deck on them.

One thing enjoyable about other Cruise lines is the Large Cigar lounges with TV's ( sports) , plush leather chairs and service. And on many nights, quite lively yet elegant

Unless things have changed since my last time on Jewel -April 20th 2008 Transatlantic - there is now no smoking allowed in the Cigar Room. Changed April 6th they tell me.

 

In fact they took down the name from it and of course removed the ashtrays.They still left the cigars on display in the locked glass cabinets.

 

I asked the HD about this and he informed me that it was now a fleetwide policy - orders from Landside, Miami.

 

I know it sounds crazy but there you are. Apparently on the Jewel Class ships the cigar room is too close (they say) to Le Bistro, it was OK when it was just a few cigar smokers but when they banned cigarette smoking in the Champagne Bar all the cigarette smokers dived in to the Cigar Room and puffed away, and Le Bistro patrons complained about the smoke getting into Le Bistro.

 

This is what I was told. It sounds plausible to me.

 

I already posted it several weeks ago on here, (May 5th) apparently few folk noticed it.

Any recent cigar smoking passenger should be able to confirm this, as far as Jewel is concerned cigars are now allowed in the Sky High Bar ( mostly open air) and the Great Outdoors after 5pm.

 

Unless of course NCL have changed their policy again which is always possible.

The casinos have a bar and yes, smoking is allowed in the casino bar. We recently found the Gem casino to be extremely smokey. I would imagine there were folks in the casino bar to have an indoor bar to smoke in and they weren't gambling at all.
