lorene1 Posted June 4, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2008 Hi Oceania folks- We would prefer to wander around Taormina independently. Does anyone know if there are taxis at the port or a ship shuttle to take us from the dock in Gardini to Taormina? Or are we stuck with a 4 hr. shore excursion as the only option????? Bollinge Posted June 5, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2008 Please search the "ports of call" pages and you will find many posts about this. I recommend the train and bus.
lorene1 Posted June 6, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted June 6, 2008 Thanks Cool Cruiser. Search has been "down" so I paged thru 9 pages of entries and found a relevant one. Seems that it's a 20 minute ride from Gardini to Taormina. Have never cruised with Oceania so just wonder if they offer shuttles from the tender areas or if we are always on our own to snag taxis. Guess I will have to wait and see!
Fetchpeople Posted June 10, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 10, 2008 O does not provide a shuttle to Taormina. There are taxis at the dock, but the easiest way to Taormina is to walk to the local bus stop. For about 1.4 Euros, you can take the bus and get there is about 15-20 minutes. The buses run frequently and are A/C. You will need to walk from the dock to the bus stop (in front of the "modern" church along the waterfront. There is a closer stop, which you would likely choose on the return, but the church one is better (easier to find) for your trip to Taomina
lorene1 Posted June 13, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted June 13, 2008 Thanks so much for the insights and detail. My concern was that there might not be enough taxis for all the cruisers, and the bus sounds like an excellent option.
jaybk28 Posted April 12, 2011 #6 Share Posted April 12, 2011 How far is the walk from ship dock in Naxos to the town bus to Taormina, Italy. Does the bus have a Number or sign ?
TERRIER1 Posted April 12, 2011 #7 Share Posted April 12, 2011 We were there on a SUnday and never saw a bus so beware of the day you are in port.
dougt1957 Posted April 13, 2011 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2011 When we were there last May we just walked off the boat and taxis were waiting. Another couple asked us to share a cab and we did and this made it a little cheaper. I can't recall the amount but it was not terribly expensive. Maybe 5 or ten euros per couple at the most. We were there a few years and shared a cab to Taormina. It was closer to 10 euros per couple then.
orchestrapal Posted April 13, 2011 #10 Share Posted April 13, 2011 We've been there the last two years and had no problem getting a taxi when the ship docked. Just don't run out with the first "gotta be first" crowd and you'll have no problem as the taxis keep coming to the port.:)
dougt1957 Posted April 14, 2011 #11 Share Posted April 14, 2011 It is a nice little town with a pedestrian area to walk and shop. We also went to the Roman theater which has a nice view.
