jennyvag Posted June 6, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 6, 2008 First Time Cruiser question here: do women typically wear long gowns / dresses for formal nights or are cocktail dresses more common? I have a beautiful lime green dress that I purchased while it was on sale and I'd love an excuse to wear it! Thanks for your help :)
soupbones wife Posted June 6, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 6, 2008 We just now are able to cruise in the off season since DH retired from teaching so we always went during spring break. Then it was like prom night as there were many young girls and they were able to get use of their prom dresses. I have worn long dresses, a dressy pant suit that looked like a tux and black pants with a sparkly top and also a cocktail dress. My rule of thumb is wear what you would wear to a fancy wedding. cb at sea Posted June 6, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 6, 2008 You will not be out of place if you wear a gown on formal night--that's what you're supposed to wear! Basically, wear what makes you look your best and makes you happy!
Ehpride Posted June 6, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 6, 2008 Absolutely wear it. I've seen gowns, cocktail dresses and so on. Some go more casual but imo, they stand out more than the people who dress up. I wore two long gowns on my last cruise and I wasn't the only one. Lynn the Cruiser Posted June 9, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 9, 2008 I am so excited because my daughter just got married so I have a MOB dress to wear. I've always worn fancy dresses, some cocktail, some long, but never one as nice as this one!!!
happysinglemom Posted June 9, 2008 #6 Share Posted June 9, 2008 First Time Cruiser question here: do women typically wear long gowns / dresses for formal nights or are cocktail dresses more common? You will see both...but I personally prefer formal gowns that are full length. I love to wear them! :)
cruiser2101 Posted June 9, 2008 #7 Share Posted June 9, 2008 We've noticed on our January cruises there were many long gowns, but on our recent May cruise we saw more cocktail length. Apparently the time of year has a lot to do with how people dress on formal night.
mousey Posted June 12, 2008 #8 Share Posted June 12, 2008 I'm a seasoned cruiser and I've seen it all. Wear what you are comfortable with. I've seen everything from beautiful long gowns, to pretty Sunday best. I myself have never worn a long gown because I would not get much use out of it. I have always worn cocktail dresses and never felt uncomfortable even on expensive European cruises.
Cruzfan34 Posted June 12, 2008 #9 Share Posted June 12, 2008 Agreed. I've seen all kinds of dresses on formal nights. While I won't wear anything but a floor-length gown, I've seen cocktail-type dresses...even formal pantsuits. You have to wear what works for you. :)

I have a champagne chiffon one, and a silver satin one that I wear the pants and tank top with several other jackets with silver in them. I also have a beaded short dress, but I don't think I can take it anymore because it adds so much weight to the suitcase.
RachelD Posted June 12, 2008 #12 Share Posted June 12, 2008 I usually wear a long formal dress the first formal night and wear a shorter coctail dress for the second. My mother wore a fabulous formal pantsuit and she looked great. wear what you want - you will see it all.

pacarolinagirl Posted June 12, 2008 #14 Share Posted June 12, 2008 I'm a first time cruiser too and I was concerned about being over dressed. A gentleman reassured me that I would see all kinds and that if it made me happy, go for it. I'm taking his advice. :)
WhiteRabbit Posted June 12, 2008 #15 Share Posted June 12, 2008 Will anyone notice and snicker at me if I wear the same dress on both formal nights? Or should I do one nice pair of black pants and change out a fancy top each night? I want to pack light this time.
galavant3 Posted June 12, 2008 #16 Share Posted June 12, 2008 No one will notice if you wear the same dress on both formal nights! Change your jewelry and it will look like a whole new outfit.
