Old activities I miss....

After just reading the post on 'champagne waterfall and midnight feast' I started to think of all the things that have disappeared from cruising over the years. Things that I miss are:

* crepes suzette cooked by the head waiters late at night

* midnight buffet (even though I could never eat much this late at night, it always looked so great

* the dining rooms decorated for theme nights (and while we are on dining the alaska parade, chicken dance and of course on the Dawn the call to dinner -bon apetito)

* the beer quoits (my daughter loved this)

* Captains welcome aboard party (Dawn)

* passenger involvement shows

* games such as catchphrase, celebrity heads, afternoon madness etc (always fun)

I am sure there is more but that is all I can think off for now.

I still love cruising anyway:)

All the above.

I had forgot about crepes suzette. Yummmm.

We usually went in the passenger involvement shows and made a complete idiot of ourselves :o

Dare I add: "If we were not upon the sea"...:o

Balloon drop at the end of each cruise

Crew lined up as you boarded and then a personal escort to your cabin.

I'll think of more immediately after submitting this post ...

I missed the Dining Room 'activities' like the chicken dance, alaska parade, etc. when we were on the Dawn last year, as well as the Captains Welcome aboard party. I missed the games like you mentioned also, especially the beer quoits. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention and it was happening somewhere I wasn't aware of. It affects the 'feeling' of your cruise a little bit if you have been used to seeing it on the Pac Sun, Sky and Star. The thing I missed the most was "if I were not upon the sea'. That should never be lost. They also didn;t have the warm cookies at the bar. I was hoping that it was only because it was the first cruise here for the Dawn and maybe they just didn't have it all organized in time. I am wondering if it's still that way.

They have the warm cookies at the coffee shop opposite the pursers desk, my daughter loves them too:)

I miss the huge desserts that were created by the pastry chefs. Not that we ate them, but they were so creative we took lots of photos. Was disappointed on the Pacific Dawn to find the only desserts in the Cafe del Sol were small pieces on a plate.

Once upon a time you could cut your own piece and my hubby loved the bowl of whipped cream that sat alongside. Of course he has the tummy to prove it.

on the sun princess many of those activies were still run.

We saw "if i were not upon the seas". They came around the pool in the afternoon with fresh cookies and milk(very american i know!!)

we had a midnight buffet at the island party, we had the alaska parade. The staff dressed differently for different theme nights. We had a welcome aboard cocktail party as well as a past cruisers party.

The passenger show has now turned into an "idol" type of show, more karaoke.

MOst lunch times they had a huge theme buffet with the huge desserts on them but there were alos the tiny sample cakes on the main buffet.

Maybe it is just P and O that is cutting these corners as they were there for our princess cruise.

Plus this cruise was much cheaper than the one that left the day before ours on the same itinerary on the pacific dawn

We also had a big party for the champagne fountain with a balloon drop and streamers which made it more like NYE.

Yes, and the buffet was 24hrs as well.

Loved the waiters uniforms on Italian night. They did not announce Bon apetito, but thanks to the info we received here, we announced it to each other at the table. Our waiters caught on pretty quick, so we were greated that way when we were seated each night. Sounds great with a Phillipino accent! :)

Would have loved the crepes suzette if it were available though.

What about the bottle of Pacific Sky champagne past cruisers used to get ... cut that as well .. I have one in my bar .. probably saved them $1 a passenger.. they make me angry when I see the prices that you can cruise out of NZ .. we have to add the airfare so it makes it the same for us ... Shame P & O .. bring on more competition....

Most of the things mentioned are still available on the Princess Cruises we had been on. I miss the italian waiters from the Fairstar days, sooo flirty but I was sooo young too.

I also miss the cheap drinks at least I think they were a lot less expensive than these days.

I suppose we should be grateful that cruises are still so affordable and you can pick what type of cruise you are looking for. If we are with our teenagers we go for one type, if it is just hubby and me then we go the whole hog.

The next one is just for us...:D
