Newark airport to Port Cape Liberty

Recommended Posts

You will be able to board around 11:30am, the ride from Newark is about 20 minutes or so but keep in mind that you have to allow extra time for delays, getting luggage etc and you must be checked in 90 minutes before sail time.

The cruise terminal is very close to Newark airport. Like the post above states, you have to get your luggage, and without traffice 15-20 minutes. Count on 30 minute ride and you will be safe. :)

It might be advisable to alter your train of thought just a bit...

Instead of trying to figure out the latest time you can possibly arrive without missing the ship, you might want to reverse things and see just how early you can get there instead. Much better to have some time on your hands than to be stressed out over the tiniest delay.

You'll find that many cruisers prefer to arrive one day early esp if delays are possible (i.e. snow/fog/congestion/etc). The hotel costs are cheap insurance.

Happy Cruising,

Alan

Being a frequent traveller into and out of Newark Airport, I would suggest you think carefully about the amount of time you leave yourself to get to the pier. Here's why:

1) EWR is probably one of the most delay prone airports in the country. Its operating at a capacity that leaves little to no room for error and the take-off and landing runways are too close together, so that, in bad weather when the flights are using instruments to land they have to have greater spacing between the flights (which, with no excess capacity, means flight delays grow increasingly larger throughout the day). No particular airline you fly is going to help with this--its just a fact of Newark Airport. You might be fine and arrive perfectly on time--plenty of flights do; but, at the same time, you could have arrival delays of a few hours coming in.

How do you avoid this? Well, time of day matters--the earlier the flight the better coming in (avoids the issue of increasing delays). Day of travel matters too--as you can imagine Sunday nights, Monday mornings, Thursday evenings and Fridays are big business travel days and have more air traffic than other days. If you're travelling during one of these times, you have an increased chance of the severe delays.

2) While the port is very close to the airport (to the point that from the ground you can probably see the gantry cranes in Bayonne!), you have to take one of a few routes to Bayonne that is the same route that most people take into Hoboken, Jersey City and . . . New York City. Needless to say, mornings can be very congested, as are the evenings (a lot of reverse commuters). The good news is, at worst case, since you're so close it won't be worse than an hour, but its worth being prepared for.

I know after you read this, everything will be perfect (let's face it, the above can happen, but you can also have a perfect day) and you'll be at the port extra early, but hey, you're on vacation, might as well spend some extra time on the ship!
