Recent Zenith sickness

I saw an earlier post which indicated that there had been sickness. Has anyone recently returned (within the last couple weeks) that can give an update? I'm sailing on 4/11.

Kevin:
Go and have a wonderful cruise, we were on the Zenith in Feb 2004 and there was no sickness that we saw, we were traveling with a party of 5 couples and no one became ill. Just always remember wash your hands often, and just be aware that illness may affect any group of people anywhere not just cruise ships .......Just have a great time and don't worry about everything you read on these boards........not always correct.

We were on the 3/14-28 Zenith and there were many people who became ill...my husband included. By the end of the cruise they finally put a hand sanitizer outside of the dining room which was not there at the beginning leading us to believe there were quite a few cases. Our tablemate got sick the next to last night and was not able to make dinner...quaranteed to his cabin for 24 hrs.

We know of many who were sick on this cruise..passengers and staff.

Veracruz, Costa Riviera, Seabreeze, Oceanbreeze, Sitmar Fairwind(now Princess), Costa Classica, Regal Empress, Celebrity Century, Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Pride, Carnival Legend, Holland America Zandaam, Carnival Glory 1/04,

Just went on the CDC website and came up with interesting info. Zenith has reported no sickness this year, however, the Horizon that came in 4/12 was listed as carrying the Norwalk virus. I haven't seen anything about Horizon pax being sick. They had almost 4% of passengers down with it.

I sure hope they get this under control. Norwalk sounds like it makes you feel awful!!!

This might be more than you really want to know.
But I was curious about the Norwalk Virus, and read this.
Norwalk gastroenteritis is transmitted by the fecal-oral route via contaminated water and foods. Secondary person-to-person transmission has been documented. Water is the most common source of outbreaks and may include water from municipal supplies, well, recreational lakes, swiming pools, and water stored aboard cruise ships.
Shellfish and salad ingredients are the foods most often implicated in Norwalk outbreaks. Ingestion of raw or insufficiently steamed clams and oysters poses a high risk for infection with Norwalk virus. Foods other than shellfish are contaminated by ill food handlers.
Should one drink bottled water only? I usually do. But I guess anything raw - hence salads may pose a problem.

I wonder if coffee and iced tea are suffiently heated in the making process to be safe to drink during meals? I never drink water in my cabin except bottled, same on deck, but I must confess, I do drink the iced water with my meal.
Guess on this trip I will order a bottle of water and a glass at meals. And I wonder about the ice? Anyone know or have thoughts?

The ships water is purified and basically made for lack of a better word on board. You buy bottled water which for one thing has been handled by numerous people before you get it. There have also been various reports including one recently that a major supplier of one bottled water was using tap water.

Don,

Serious question. The CDC says this virus can be contained in 'stored water on cruise ships'. Would this be the water we drink at dinner, the water in the tap or what? I just would like to avoid getting this thing if I can. Any help appreciated!

Previous post also refers to water in swimming pools. The water in those pools is salt water and, therefore, unchlorinated I assume? Sounds like this could be a potential source. Especially after reading some of the unbelievable discussions in other areas/boards regarding children who aren't potty trained in swimming pools which then go into all kinds of references to uncleanly adults, etc. Does anyone know if they treat this water? When you think of the pool size aboard vs. the number of passengers using that pool all day long I would hope they add something?

So far - we've eliminated -

drinking water - either bottled or ship - and having ice

eating lettuce, clams, oysters

swimming in the pools

lying on the bedspreads

touching doorknobs

etc. etc. etc.

Any place where large groups of people are together are filled with germs of all sorts.

Guess what? I spent the vast majority of the previous week in my house with only DH and three cats and now have a bad cold.

Wash your hands and live life.

As I read these posts, I see that more people come down with the respritory illness than the Noro. I have been plagued with the respritory virus many times, on all different lines, NCL, Princess, Hal, and recently Celebrity Infinity. Never had the Noro, thank goodness.
Someone correct me if this is not the case: the respritory virus is air-borne, and Noro is hand to hand. Washing hands is best for Noro, however, one can hardly escape the respritory virus if air borne. Thus, everyone is exposed just by walking around. Is there a solution?

Yes, I guess we'll have to had one to more thing to Smudge'smom list - don't breathe. LOL.
I'm going to just emjoy my cruise and hope for the best. Maybe alcohol (internally) will do the trick. It's a good excuse for having a martini in my hand at all times.

Im with you Mari....martini should do the trick!

My Dr told my its just as easy to get the norwalk virus at the local grocery store or dining out as it is on a cruise ship...that the virus has shown up in schools, large companies and casinos.....

Take a deep breath (maybe off ship so as not to get the other illness..hahah) and enjoy the cruise.

I have been lucky to not having gotten sick on any of our cruises. I do without exception get sick when I get home. I'm down for at least a week. After the last cruise I just hit the couch knowing I would be sick. I was there for three days before I realized I was feeling fine. Stayed there and got waited on for another 3 days just to make sure.
