What happened in Cozumel last Friday?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I were aboard the "Rhapsody of the Seas" in Cozumel last Friday (10/15) and as the ship was waiting to set sail, a family was seen leaving the ship. They had their luggage with them as they left. As soon as they stepped off the gangway, the ship pulled away from the pier.

Anyone know what happened? Just curious. Have never seen people actually leaving the ship while on a cruise.

Let me shed some insight to this unfortunate event. We were traveling on the Mariner and we were in Cozumel on Friday. One of our Cruise Critic members, someone I have been posting with for over 1 year in anticipation of our cruise, was taken off of the ship having a pancreatic attack. He and his wife left the ship and were taken to the hospital. Subsequently, he was airlifted to Orlando, FL where 2 surgeries took place. Sadly, SeaSlick (John) passed away yesterday afternoon. What you saw, may have been his wife and their luggage, as they left the ship that afternoon. I am not certain that this is the incidence you were referring to, but if it was, it was a very sad and unfortunate event. The Mariner and the Rhapsody are docked so closely, I am not sure if you were positive which ship they were off of. If I am wrong and the persons you saw were off the Rhapsody, I apologize for intruding on your thread. I just wanted to put this on this thread so that it didn't get out of hand or turn into a comedy thread, in light of the situation. We are all praying for his family and hope that they find comfort in this time of need. Thanks for letting me post this.

thanks for the insight triplemom3. Our prayers are certainly with his family!! What an unfortunate end to a vacation. It certainly causes us to think how short life really is and to appreciate family, friends and life while we can. We all are not as invincible as we think!! God be with his family.

triplemom3 - Thank you for posting an explaination. Pancreatic attack - never heard of anyone having one.

My thoughts and prayers with the family also. I am sure that you have had a tough time as well.:(

BTW - Loved your photo's and your children are so cute. The pics bring back memories of our July Mariner.

Thank you Sea Island Lady for the compliments. We really enjoyed the Mariner and we have already booked Jewel for next year.

Acute pancreatic attacks can be fatal, not often, but possible.

I will never forget talking to him the last time after he and tback (his wife) adopted a horse for the horse racing onboard. He was smiling then, and I'm sure he is smiling from above. May he rest in peace.

Thanks Laura for reminding me of our last encounter with them. They were trying to explain this whole horse business and I was lost. BTW, tried to call last night but Alan said you were sleeping. Needed to talk about situation. We are still trying to come to grips. It put a pall on an otherwise fantastic cruise.

John was the de facto leader of the Mariner Marauders and we all loved him. Some of us did not get to know him in person as well as we would have liked, but his presence was huge on board to us who have known him from these boards. Selfishly, I was really looking forward to his post cruise banter. So Long Slick.

Laura, glad you posted the pictures. Those kids are awesome. Keith and I were talking about them tonight.

Our prayers are with them too. We had the same sort of event happen to us on our Majesty sailing, only it was not a person we met here @ CC (at the time we didn't know about this site). We met these people in the Schooner before sailing and got to know them all pretty good. Then Joey had a heart attack on Coco Cay. He was only 49, so do be thankful for everyday...

I feel for the family what a terrible thing to happen on a cruise. I sure didnt mean to make light of the situation because I have heard of families having to leave the ship for teenagers drinking. I will say a prayer for the familly.

We had two instances of folks being taken off a ship. The first was with Disney. We sailed the Magic the week after she was held in port for a major cleaning due to the Norwalk Virus. The ship, as usual, was squeaky clean, but people still spread germs whether you clean or not. So, as some people were getting sick, they were quarantined to their rooms. The ship staff brought them room service, and they were provided with VCR's and movies in their cabins. They were warned not to leave their cabin if they were sick. A couple of people decided that they didn't care if they were sick, they were going to do whatever they wanted. Well.... they were politely escorted off the ship at the next port along with their family members. These people just didn't get it! It costs the cruise lines megabucks to cancel a cruise for cleaning and also the inconvenience and heartache caused to passengers who might have been booked on that particular cruise. The passengers were glad to see that Disney was enforcing that rule!

The last time was in May on the Carnival Victory. A married couple from the Middle East got into a big fight in their room and were screaming and physically fighting. When security arrived, the two were split up. The woman was later heard making a general "threat" about the ship. (This happened around 3 a.m.). When we arrived in port at Grand Caymans, they brought the police and dogs on board to check out their room since she made a threat (something about blowing up the ship). No one was allowed off the ship until this mess was all settled. Consequently, the couple were taken off the ship in Caymans and the rest of the passengers were able to tender into the island. It caused a two hour delay from everyone's day, but once we found out what was going on, it was good to know that this lady was just "blowing off at the mouth" and not serious about her threat.

Not to confuse the issue, but I don't believe that the issue on board the Mariner is what everyone is referring to. The people related to the Mariner incedent left the ship for the last time at about 3:30 in the afternoon, I know because we walked off the ship with them. Whatever happened on the Rhapsody is not realted to this issue, as neither ship left until much later that day. Hope that clarifies things at least a little...Now the question still remains- what happened on the Rhapsody?
And why can't it be discussed publicly? If someone is willing to freely email it to others, why can't they broadcast for us all to see?
