Booking while onboard

DM

Recommended Posts

I read a review that mentioned booking a future cruise while onboard. Does anyone know what the benefits of doing this are? The post mentioned an onboard credit. Does anyone know the specifics? This must be fairly new since they were not doing this last year.

Thanks!

Hi Debbie - Only a couple of ships are doing it now as a test. I wanted to take advantage of it during my cruise last month as the Splendor was supposed to be one of the ships but they hadn't started yet :(

I know it's a set amount...like pay a $100 deposit and then you get a $100 onboard credit for the cruise you book. I don't know the exact amount though...someone will come along that does.

You can book on board, as well as buy a "Future Carnival Vacation" certificate for $100.00. We purchased a certificate on the Liberty. With that you can get an OBC of $50.00/stateroom on a 3-5 day cruise, $75/stateroom on a 6 day cruise, $100/stateroom on a 7-8 day cruise, and $200/stateroom on a 12 day or longer cruise. The OBC cannot be used for gambling or to pay your gratuities. You have five years to use the certificate. Once you book you mail the certificate in with your booking number.

My PVP said that the certificate can be mailed prior to your final payment.

I, also, did the certificates with Vivian & Hai on Carnival Liberty the other week. It is a good program, but has a few glitches that they are already aware of.

Interesting situation though. . . . I bought four, and have already mailed two off to CCL. One is for a 9-day sailing on Carnival Dream. Will be interesting to see what they offer for the OBC, since they (seemingly) foolishly left a gap of days between those two to credit categories. Nothing listed for 9, 10, or 11 days. I'm hoping they'll split it in half, and make it $150, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

Hello my Artful friend!!!

Didn't you just love Vivienne? Everytime I saw her she stopped with a smile and a "How are you? Are you having a good time?" Even when in port!

We got one certificate, which we'll use for our next cruise in September. Will you let us know, Don, what they decide about the 9-11 days OBC?

Also, if you see this, would you write me when you're able? valancy1@yahoo.com

This deal isn't much good if you normally get a military discount... I was told last week on the Valor that you can use the military discount OR the booking deal... not both!!

Wouldn't be a great deal for us at all!!!

MAMASUE: do you know the military discount code by chance. If you do would you pretty please email it to me at basill1970f@yahoo.com I get tired of calling my pvp every time i want to check on military pricing. I had no idea on the credit certificate, ty for the info we bought one on the valor as well. We have always used past cruiser discount and not the military one?

I'm curious what the glitches are. I bought one a few months ago and it looks like a good deal especially if using on a longer cruise. Vivian assured me that it would be valid if booking a group cruise (like one of the CC groups) and that initially they weren't valid on group bookings but that they since had gotten that approved. Any other issues we should know about?

There isnt a military code. There are several online TAs where you can check the military pricing pretty easily though of course they cant be mentioned here.

sorry no military code though. (just to save others from asking)

I don't know anything about a military code, but my DH just had to produce his discharge papers (dd214?) and we always get $500 off for the 2 of us. The military discount was better than the past cruiser's discount.

Cindi

If you book any of the European cruises for 2009 and you are a past guest it is a much better deal with that and the certificate than the military. One of them priced out at $30 less for military than past guest and military got no on board credit. Past get got $200 OBC plus another $200 OBC from the certificate making it $400 spending money. I also have CCL stock and on the 16 day cruise I will get another $250 OBC so now I am up to $650 OBC....see folks you never can tell which will be the better deal huh.

If you are on the Valor, Liberty, Conquest or Freedom buy one!!! It's a great thing and free spending money.

So let me get this straight--if you own CCL stock you get an onboard credit of a determined amount EVERY TIME you sail?

How does one buy stock from CCL. Please don't think this is a stupid question; I've never done it but want to! :)

You don't buy the CCL stock directly from the company but from any reputable stock broker in your town. It is an investment as you're buying ownership in the company. But if you have enough savings, the way I see it is that they might as well be working for you instead of just sitting in a bank account. I'm also looking doing this. The amount of dividend the company pays is currently more than I'm earning with it sitting in a savings account. And yes, there are "perks" for investors in CCL. And I understand that they apply to all the companies CCL owns, ie. Carnival, Princess, HAL, etc. I'm not sure what they are at this time as they can change, but a friend who owns the stock told me they are nice. You can find out more by going to Carnival's website and down at the bottom of the page click on investor relations or you can have your broker research it for you. Do be aware, though, that it is possible to lose your money if the stock goes down or the company goes out of business. But that risk is probably less than if I lost the same amount sitting onboard at the casino! And the company won't go out of business 'cause we're not going to quit sailing, are we?

Just be aware the price can go up or down, you could lose a lot. Im sure Im down $2500 on the shares of RCL I own, only down a little on the 500 I own of CCL. Holding up better than some stocks however, but still down right now.

Whatever OBC I get will take a lot of years to make up for the price going down lately, so just make sure you dont buy just for the OBC. Every stock is a risk lately.

Debra: Saw your earlier message, and will be e-mailing you later this week (of not later today).

I only recently did the 'stock thing' and found LOTS of great info just sitting at my PC. Did a Google search using "Buying Stock Online", and the page filled up with links. I also went to Barnes & Noble and looked at some charts and books they have. A little education over a latte'. :)

I personally used an online company that begins with 'F', but there are multiple ones to choose from. No, I'm not stock savvy by any means, but my timing was more than perfect when I got involved. Again, it was mostly luck, so I have little quality advise to offer you directly.

Because I'm currently crusing frequently, the OBC has certainly been a nice perk.

Does anyone know whether they do these for a single person in a cabin? Maybe cut the OBC in half or ?? Or is it like most of their specials, and it just doesn't apply to singles?

Yes the advance certificates DO apply to single cruisers, and you are exactly correct in your guess. . . OBC is only half.

That is one of the 'glitches' I mentioned earlier, as they do not take into consideration the category of cabin being booked. If booking into a 1A, then you are paying 150% if the advertised fare. It would be cool if they then offered you 75% of the certificate OBC, but that's Carnival's call, and I doubt they would change it. I accept that.

My situation that I brought up to them is that on two future sailings I am not booking into a 1A, thus being charged 200% of the advertised fare. I am fully paying for an additional person who simply doesn't exist. . . and I knew I'd be doing that from the get-go. In my personal opinion (as well as that of the CCL crew members who sold me the certificates) I should received the full OBC in that situation. She felt it was an overlooked situation, since the vast majority of singles book a 1A. Kind of like overlooking that there was a gap in the amount of days cruised printed on their certificates and brochures.

Are these available on the Valor? Where do you go to get them? I sail in less than 3 weeks!! :D

Thanks!! :D

Avril & Chris,

I'm so envious of you getting to go. I know I've just had my turn, but I am SO bitten by the cruise bug. We were going to go for T'giving, but we can't get to Miami, PC, FLL, or anywhere else as we can't get a cruise for $600 and then pay $1800 air fare. Flying free is out of the question to return when we need to for our respective jobs. So ENJOY YOUR CRUISE!

Anyway, the certificates for us were at a special desk on the Promenade Deck and they were there nearly all the time. Plus you will hear about it over and over from your Cruise Director as well. You cannot miss it if you pay attention.

I should have bought a couple. We'll get another on our next cruise.

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick answer! I'm actually glad to see that at least they didn't completely leave the people who like to travel in their own cabin out. I agree with you about the percentage that they SHOULD give, though.
