Very true! I'll never forget a "daily quiz" on a cruise a few years ago that required one to take ordinary English words (anorak, jumper, aubergine) and translate them into American.

 

As a Canadian, I figured I'd be mid-Atlantic enough to win this one easily. Sadly, I was stumped by "pantechnicon" (which I thought was any semi, not specifically a furniture removal truck) , and a savvy Brit scooped the hono(u)rs.
