Battle of the Ship Horns

Have any of you experienced this? Out of our 13 or so cruises I've only experienced it twice. Once was on the SSNorway (NCL) in St. Thomas, and the last time was two years ago in Miami when we were setting sail (on the RCI Navigator of the Seas).

 

In St. Thomas, when we set sail, before the rest of the ships, each ship would blow their horn one right after another until we were way out at sea and we could still hear them blowing at each other! It was so much fun.

 

While leaving Miami two years ago, we were in port behind what I remember to be a Carnival ship. Our horn would blow a pattern, then the ship in front would copy it, and that went on for about 10 minutes. They even did the classic.....da-da-da-da-da........DA-DA!!! With the other ship doing the last two blows!! Everyone was cheering and it was so loud!! Both ships passengers really were getting a kick out of it.

 

Has anyone experinced this lately, or on a Carnival ship in a certain port? I'm hoping it will happen this trip. It's really something to experience!!

We had the same experience when leaving St Maarten last year. There were four ships, two Carnival one Princess and one Holland America. It went on for ten minutes or so and the passengers on all the ships really seemed to enjoy it.

I may be the only one, but all that noise would give me a serious headache! :eek: I certainly hope to never be one of the "lucky" ones to experience it...

I think it's great that there's interaction between the ships. We've seen crew members who obviously knew each other waving and shouting back and forth as we left port and passed another Carnival ship. I love it! :)

In Greece, on Louis Lines Calypso we were in Samos with Coral. When we were leaving, we saluted her with three long blasts. Calypso had a definite tenor voice...Coral replied with three blasts, baritone. Calypso did three again, and Coral replied with one short poke at the horn...sounded like a deep burp. Everyone on deck was laughing. But there is nothing like the deep voice of the QE2. Every where you go, ships will salute her to get to hear her reply. On our farewell from Stavanger this year, all the steam vessels there for the festival that were escorting us out kept tooting, trying to get her to reply. She did, three times. EM

When we were on the Disney Magic, we passed the Wonder and each ship blew there horns several times while passing each other.:)

Thanks so much for posting this video. I have had the wonderful experience of hearing the Disney Wonder horn as we departed port and I can tell you that to this day it still brings tears of happiness to my eyes.

We were on the Jubilee in Ensenada on our way to Hawaii, and got into a horn battle with the Holiday.

 

Best video I've seen on You Tube was the Normay battling it out with what ever ship the videogragher was on.

We arrived home yesterday from our cruise on the Black Prince, In port at Madera along with three other ships we had the same ritual. it was a grand gesture, loved it made for a great farewell. as we where homeward bound to Liverpool uk 4 days at sea. So ships keep it up.

Just like driving an automobile, ships also have traffic rules. Here is a sampling:

• Ships keep to the right and pass to the right in shipping lanes with certain exceptions.

• <LI class=bodyships>Ship whistles: In certain circumstances or crowded lanes, ships use their whistles (horns) as directional signals. If a ship is passing another vessel, it gives a single blast on its horn, which means it is turning to starboard. Two blasts signals a turn to port. The other ship acknowledges by repeating the same whistle or horn blast
  <LI class=bodyships>Ship whistles are also sounded when in port signaling the various stages in the preparation to depart, such as warning signal that it is time for visitors to depart the vessel. Usually three blasts are given as the ship slides out of its berth. When the pilot of the vessel disembarks from the vessel at the entrance to the harbor, a short blast is given as well. Ship whistles are also sounded in emergency situations, such as the signal for passengers to go to their designated boat stations.
  <LI class=bodyships>Navigational running lights are used at night: green for starboard; red for port; plus two white lights on the mast. The forward light is lower than the aft one.
   
  
• Flags and pennants are displayed for identification. Cruise lines display their emblems on ship’s funnels. Each time a country is visited, its national flag is flown along with the ship’s flag of registry (often a different country from which the ship is from). Upon entering a harbor, the ship flies a special flag to request a pilot (vertical blue and white striped) while a half-red, half white flag divided vertically, indicates that a pilot is on board the vessel.

We experienced this b/t the Fantasy and Conquest once, and my son, who has migraines and an anxiety disorder, couldn't handle it. We were on the Sports Deck taking pictures and we had to go inside to get away from the horns. I thought it was neat, but it's not for everyone!
