Accomodation near wharf 8

I know this has been discussed before but can't find the thread. We are sailing on the Pacific Dawn on the 20th of March next year and would like to come down to Sydney a day early to have a look around and relax. Can anyone advise on accomodation near wharf 8 that may even have a view of Pacific Dawn at the wharf.

We are staying at Travelodge Wynyard not to be confused with Wynyard Hotel.

I don't know if you have view of P/D at wharf.

If you go to accomodation in Sydney near wharf 8 on google they will show some and you can even google to see where it is and you can read more about that acc........

We have stayed at Four Points by Sheraton, which if you have a harbour view room, you would have a great view of PD (at wharf 8). The city view rooms however just look across the road to another building. Id love to stay there again, we found everyone there happy and helpful, even sent up champagne when they found out we were celebrating a birthday.

To add, Harbour view rooms at the Ibis and at Grand Mecure Apartments will give a view across Darling Harbour to Wharf 8 (with a room 10 floors up +). The right rooms at Medina Grand Harbourside can have you close enough that you can almost touch.

 

This one is not close walking to Darling Harbour, but is only a short ferry ride away to DH or the Quay, and the views from a Harbourview room at Harbourside apartments are the best I have ever experienced in my travels - like these shots taken from our room:

The Ibis Harbour view rooms give you a great view of Pacific Dawn but The Rooms are miniscule and its like being in a dog box,

we stayed there 3 nights after our Pacific dawn cruise in August,

the location is unbeatable but the rooms are terribly small,

beds that slope from the middle and only two cheap little pillows.

Also only 1 reception staff - very slow checkin /check out

We'd never stay there again,

I don't know about Mercure right next door but Ive heard their rooms are small too

I agree with the Ibis. When it was built, it was promoted to the Asian market that would still see the rooms as palacial.

 

We stayed there once when it was new, with our daughter in a collapsable cot. It was unbearably small with the cot, having to move the cot to get past. Depends if you just want an economical room with a bed and a view, but I also prefer some more elbow room.

You would get a great view of the ship from star city casino. The wharf is just across the harbour it would probley take 5-10 minutes to get there by taxi. But im not sure how much the rooms cost at star city these days i've heard that they can be quite expensive.

I have stayed at Darling Harbour several times.

My view is that to get the best perspective, of W8 as well as the city, is to find accommodation on the western side, looking back over the Darling Harbour/Cockle bay water. Hotels on the city side, whilst a little closer do not have the same vista.

On the western side there are 3 x Accor chain properties. The Grand Mercure; The Ibis and the Novotel. My experience is with the Novotel which I would recommend. At the moment Wotif is offering accommodation there at between $229-$329. It will all depend on when and what level of accom is required - obviously a city/harbour view is worth paying extra.

Location is excellent, but note that it will still be a bit of a walk to the pier - not far, but if you are hobbling like Shirley is at the moment with a broken toe,:( then you might have to go the long way via cab.

I too have stayed at the Novotel Darling Harbour and it has great views of the city ..It is a lovely hotel and is really covenient to City/DH/casino. Try getting a room higher up in order to view Wharf 8 ..I would stay there in a heartbeat if I were overnighting it .. Although Geoffs photos might persuade me otherwise ..

The Ibis is next door, closer to the ship, we have booked there for January the night before our cruise, as Geoff mentioned, yes much smaller typical Ibis rooms, but we paid $67, will ask for an upgrade to a harbourview room when we get there with the trusty Advantage plus card;), if not, $67 is a bargain and will only sleep there.

 

We enjoyed the Novotel, lovely rooms, breakfast and in a great position.

If you can afford it.... The Observatory Hotel in Kent Street, very close to the ship for embarkation... Hotel is fantastic, but unfortunatley so are the prices.

I checked the Ibis for the nights you want and they have them back up to about $150 per night. Will keep an eye out for you, as it's mid week there should be some specials coming up, perhaps after Xmas.

If I didn't love the convenience of dashing off to the Pitt St Mall and The Rocks i'd book that hotel of yours in a hearbeat just for the views!!!

 

It's not near Wharf 8 but for anyone wanting to be close to OPT we stayed at the Mantra on Bond St last weekend and it's less than a 10 min stroll away. All the rooms are fully self contained and very comfortable. Just be sure to ask for a Bond St room, not a George St room as it gets quite noisy on the George St side!

We have just returned from a cruise that left from Wharf 8. We stayed at the Wynyard Travelodge (corner of York and Margaret Streets) and had a view over York Street. It is very close to Wynyard Station (York St exit) and we were able to easily walk to the wharf (10 Mins), pulling our suitcases. We chose to carry them down some steps instead of taking a slightly longer route which also gets you to the wharf gate. We dropped the bags off and booked in about 10.30 am before walking along the waterfront for some sightseeing in Darling Harbour.

Wow, that is a great price for that part of town. Maybe they heard that the Macquarie banker's bonus pool has been reduced by one billion dollars! :eek: (Macquarie's new building is right next door to King Street wharf.)

 

For that price I'm tempted to drop the family and luggage there the night before our cruise, catch the train in in the morning. Would cost little more than cab fare, even if we can all fit in one cab.

You can call 1300 363637, it's about $280 per year to join up, but you get a free night of you choice, anywhere anytime, we save that up for the posh places:D, plus we find the value in the 50% B/L/D, so what is usually a $20 p/p buffet brekky you get for $20 for 2. we have a Mercure at Port, so we can go there for dinner and get 50% off the bill, even though we are not staying there. I booked the Ibis Darling Harbour for before our cruise and got it for $67, they have some great specials they send via email if you are a member.

 

Accor have Sofitel, Grand Mercure, Mercure,Novotel, AllSeasons, Ibis and Formula 1 to name a few under their umbrella including heaps in Asia and the South Pacific. Good for cruising to, cos you can use the hotel facilities and have a half price lunch when cruising:p there is a Sofitel at Port Denaru Fiji, a Novotel and a Mercure and Tahiti has a few......
